Plastic DVD Boxes With FLIP-LOCK Latches??? WTF???
It's already bad enough that they can't settle on an industry standard for the TYPE of box (slide in tray type, mostly cardboard with plastic snap-closure, clear brittle-plastic "jewel-case", or the one that's TRYING to be the most common... you've seen it.)

But NOW... they have started putting little FLIP-LOCK tab latches on the boxes! Whose idea was THAT?? I hate them!

It's like a child-proof cap on my DVD box. (I hate those on my drugs, why would I want it on my DVDs??)

This is in ADDITION to the cellophane wrapped tall display box(with its own anti-theft device), the DVD box (also with its anti-theft device) is also wrapped in cellophane and taped shut on THREE sides with security tape that WILL NOT come off without ruining the box.

I suppose I could get an xacto blade and cut them off... but that leaves sharp edges and looks a bit unsightly. Or I could run down to CompUSA and buy a stack of empty replacement boxes and transfer the disks and inserts to the new box. Grrr.

Okay, thats all I have to say about that. Thank you for listening.

1. I like jewel cases. I wish they would adopt that.
Those taller black thingys are more durable but are too big.

8. They're that size for a reason
One of the things the DVD Forum wanted to do was to "fix all of the problems with CD." And one of the biggest problems CD had when it came out (for the retailers, at least) was the size of the CD packaging--a CD being far smaller than an LP, it wouldn't fit in the racks LPs were merchandised in. Hence the longbox, that tree-destroying, ink-swilling attempt to make a CD exactly half the size of an LP. This box got them through to the point where everyone could justify building new display cases. Remember, back when CD first shipped it was competing with LP.

When DVD came out, the retailers who were going to have to sell them needed a package that was similar in size to a VHS tape. Hence, the Amaray box--the plastic box that holds a DVD and its liner notes. You can rack it in a VHS rack. You don't need a new shelving system at home because DVD is about the same size as VHS. It's a nice easy format to work with.

2. Nuts, isn't it?
I think packaging design people are spiking marketing executives coffee or something. That latch thing makes zero sense to me.

4. I guess it helps build up the anticipation...
when you get the DVD home. You're looking forward to watch it...and you have to go through all of that rigamarole.

Or, then again, maybe I don't have a fucking clue as to what I'm talking about here. :-)

:hi:

5. I noticed that on our Shrek 2 DVD. It sucks because the kids can't get it
open.

7. Great avatar by the way!!!
I actually got to see a lecture by Graham a few years before he passed away...it was HILARIOUS (I remember him showing a bunch of videos of elephants skiing...really weird!)

Anyways, not to hijack your thread or anything :)
