Are the waters at the Outer Banks, NC, swimmable in April?
We are going to need a SERIOUS vacation with the kids in April and the Outer Banks would be great -- how warm is the ocean that time of year?

Thanks.

water about 60 degrees.

Edit: for swimming I suggest finding a place with a heated pool. ;-)

8. We rented a house with a heated pool
the summer before last. It was one of those gigantic beach houses with 11 bedrooms. And the little pool was heated.

It was Memorial Day and certainly warm enough. The pool felt like a warm bath. I though it would feel great in the fall or early spring. This was in Emerald Isle.

4. It's pretty damn cold
as I recall...

it's been a while since I've ben there, but it stays cool until at least July...

It is beautiful there, however. I second the sugggestion about an indoor pool/heated pool where you stay.

5. At least the 'skeeters won't be at their peak size then.
And believe me, that's a good thing.

10. water is often much colder in springtime than summer or fall...
b/c it's just warming up from winter weather. There are all kinds of other variables but in general, spring oceans in the northern hemisphere are CHILLY! BRRR!
