9. My Dad Drops A Silver Dollar In The Pot Of Black Eyed Peas Too...
... while they are cooking. It's washed and clean... and it's a genuine solid silver dollar (not one of those silver-plated copper-sandwich ones).

Surely he just does it out of tradition... I can't believe that he ACTUALLY believes that it brings luck and fortune. I'll have to ask him.

21. Love cream or pickled herring
My mom would make this when we were younger. She will let it sit in a keg, don't know how long though. I just remember the keg in our basement.

7. Blackeyed peas and ham
and of course, corn bread, southern style.

Here's the deal:

You have to eat like poor folks on New Years Day. If you eat too high-falutin', the fates will take notice and pass you over for favors in the new year.
If you eat like poor folks, you will get a measure of good luck and fortune.

This is the old wives' tale.

We do it because we like to eat this way. New Year's Eve, now that is a different matter altogether. We eat like Kings!!! This year it is steak and broiled stuffed mushrooms, a special salad and twice-baked potatoes. And of course, wine!

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!

12. I'm glad you mentioned cornbread.
I don't care much for Emeril, but I like his cornbread recipe that uses a lot of salt and no sugar. It goes over really well at my house.

18. NO Sugar?????
My recipe is a sweet cornbread that has about a 1/4 cup of sugar in it. But cornbread is something that different people cook differently. Some like white, we like yellow.

23. He used a cast iron skillet, lots of oil to coat it plus more
so that when you pour in the batter, the oil makes the edges fried and crisp. About three times more salt, but not even a pinch of sugar.

10. Hoppin John!
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 11:07 PM by Ilsa
I made a delicious blend of black eyed peas and ham hocks and some other vegetables and cajun spices one year. Hoppin John I believe it was called.

Or this: Black eyed peas with jalapenos or ketchup, but not both.
