I don't feel much like dancing Some man's gone, he's tried to run my life Don't know what he's asking
He tells me I'd better get in line Can't hear what he's saying When I grow up I'm going to make it mine But these aren't dues I been paying
How much does it cost, I'll buy it The time is all we've lost, I'll try it But he can't even run his own life I'll be damned if he'll run mine, Sunshine
Sunshine go away today I don't feel much like dancing Some man's gone he's tried to run my life Don't know what he's asking
Working starts to make me wonder where The fruits of what I do are going He says in love and war all is fair But he's got cards he ain't showing
How much does it cost, I'll buy it The time is all we've lost, I'll try it But he can't even run his own life I'll be damned if he'll run mine.
Sunshine come on back another day I promise you I'll be singing This old world, she's gonna turn around Brand new bells'll be ringing

2. He did write it about Nixon :) |
|
When he performed it live, he sang it:
Nixon's got cards he ain't showin'.
At least he did on the 3 or 4 live versions I've heard.

3. I Didn't Know Any Background on the Song |
|
My musical interests lay elsewhere back in that day. Anything that got plenty of airplay (usually AM back then) was just background noise to me. I do recall a couple of friends arguing that he wasn't overtly calling out Tricky Dick - that his comments were directed toward 'The Man' generically. As I said earlier, I disagreed with their assessment - and now I feel vindicated!

4. Well, considering it came out in 1972, I'd think they'd pick up on it |

Some of my friends wore their lack of political awareness as a badge of pride.

My friends comforted themselves in the notion that the war in Vietnam was winding down, but I wasn't so comfortable by a long shot.
