2. Everytime I hear it I only ask, "Why?" |
|
I have nothing against covers, but if you're gonna do it pretty much exactly the same way the original band did it, why bother? Especially if you have *way* less talent than the original band and so come off sounding like you're auditioning for the junior class's talent show. Korn adds *nothing* of their own to the song ... and, in fact, makes it less by turning the poetic lament "I don't need no arms around me," into simplistic anger.
Do I like it ... hell no.
And don't even get me started on Marilyn Manson's "Personal Jesus."

9. My Setiments exactly... |
|
That's why JCash's version of Personal Jesus is so much better....
Or 10,000 Maniacs Peace Train....
Or 10,000 Maniacs More than This.......
Make it your own if you are going to do it...
Hell is sounds like they hired the same kids to do the chorus....

15. Three good covers ... |
|
When I first heard Cash was covering "Hurt" I thought "It's gonna be really, really good or really, really bad." Who knew it would be even better than the original? It was as though Cash had written it himself. Cash made "Personal Jesus" his own, even though I thought it was not nearly as good as "Hurt." But, for god's sake, at least it was original sounding.
Another awesome cover: Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah." It blows the original away.

21. Hurt is a great prophetic song |
|
As John was about to pass.....
Also, the Hallelujah version by Rufus Wainwright from Shrek is pretty good although if I want some great painful music to caress my ear, I head on back to the Leonard Cohen original....

I have some trance covers of PF in my collection. If so, that's pretty cool ... not great, but alright.

18. some things should just never be covered, period. |

This kinda thing irks me...bands that just need a hit, taking a classic and remaking it. It's pathetic, especially when you offer absolutely nothing new to the song. Not to mention that certain songs are already perfect and shouldn't be touched...Imagine comes to mind, that song should have never been remade, but at least the remake wasn't identical to the original. Korn is on the way out, their last two hits have been shitty covers, and I hope they don't drag any more classics with them on their way to the gutter.
