3. Congratulations!
My wife and I celebrated 20 years in July, spending an entire week in disbelief that it had actually been that long.

14. So how did you choose this date?
We were trying to get married between quarters in college. I never wanted to get married in December but that's just how it turned out and the 30th was on a Saturday. I was trying to let people get through Christmas before having to deal with a wedding.

15. Similiar - Xmas had everyone together :-)
and Congrats to Bob on 11 years!

Just a note - I've found that the first 40 years were the hardest!

Now it is all downhill! :-)

21. How many years for you?
Actually I have found marriage the easy thing - it was always my refuge from the stuff that was hard work, like raising kids and parents. Raising kids was really hard - very worth it (I would have them all again and maybe another one or two) and they have turned out to be fabulous people but I don't kid myself about how much work it was. Raising parents (Alzheimer's) is just plain hard with little reward so I was always glad to have someone to help (even wiped my mother's butt, which my brother wouldn't do). I remember people telling me how hard marriage was and after the wedding we kept looking at each other waiting for the pall to fall over us but it never did. When I was pregnant nobody mentioned that it would be hard work and I gave birth to the poster child for colic and was gobsmacked. Anyway... all that to say the credit for the success of my marriage goes to my husband, who can get along with anyone and can put up with me. I remember Carl Reiner and his wife being interviewed about what makes a successful marriage and she said she used to say things like communication, shared ideals, etc., but after 60 years of marriage her advice is just to marry someone would can stand you. I second that!

22. Marriage is a wonderful "safe place" :-)
Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 10:45 AM by papau
And I agree raising kids is great to look back on. Grandkids rule!

My parents died rather young with no more Alzheimer's than they had when I was a teenager!

But I am afraid butt wiping, feeding, goes with the territory toward the end.

Cudo's to your Husband - and to you - for hanging in there!

I love Carl Reiner and his wife - and I love the quote "just to marry someone would can stand you."

Friends of mine found that they went through a period where seeing the other take a breath was annoying - but a little counseling and a little learning of how to use "safe words" brought them back together. Other friends are into their 5th or 6th marriage/relationship. My wife and I are both first born into our families and have spent the decades fighting over who gets to lead - and "safe words" was not part of our learning -but we'd each give our life for the other! But we all - the group - grow old together!

As to how many years - we are in our 44th year together, our 41st year married.

17. Mine was the same.
We were both in college - that was during our break. Ours was on a Thursday, in the middle of the day.
We got a full week honeymoon before classes started back a day after we got back!

What's the gift for 11 years, anyway?

OK I looked it up... used to be steel (?), now it's jewelry.
