For those who have seen the extended DVD version of ROTK...
Or maybe we should call it the hyper-extended version...

Are the additional scenes just more violence and battle, or is there some plot & dialogue in there too? ZenLeftyGirl (despite her love of the game of Hockey) doesn't do well with violence in movies. There were parts of the first movie that made her physically ill. But she made it through that, toughed it through the second one (with hands over her eyes), and wants to see the third one now.

I'd like the extended version but may have to rent the regular one if the bigger one is just going to make her pass out.

Thanks in advance... :)

1. A little of both, unfortunately for your girl
It was a very violent movie. The additional non-battle scenes added story to the film, most particularly an explanation of the Eowen/Foromir romance--which was quite mysteriously arrived at in the shorter film.

Aragorn cuts of the head of the mouth of Sauron. Also, in the extended version Sauromon gets shot with an arrow by Legolas, falls off his tower and lands on a spiked water wheel.

Its not bloody, but i didn't think the first two movies were bloody either. So I'd urge some caution for the ultra-squemish.

8. Was there any blood in the movies?
Lots of used 10W-40 spouting out of orc limbs; maybe they all use the same engine as my '79 beetle. Don't remember seeing any blood. Gollum eating the fish was the worst of it for me. x(

Legolas shoots *Wormtongue*, after Wormtongue stabs Saruman in the back. Which is pretty similar to what happened in the book, except it takes place in Isengard instead of the Shire.

3. I saw it
It seemed like there were more non-violent story parts.

4. Finished it last night.
There is some additional information. Whaat happened to Saruman & Worm-tongue, how Aragorn took the corsair ships, How Eowyn and Faramir met and fell in love, how Aragorn lured Saruman into having his forces meet him in battle before the Black Gates. Lots of good stuff.

Set aside 2 evenings.

5. It's half and half, I guess. (SPOILERS, unless you've read the books)
The added expository stuff is kind of unsatisfying, though. The confrontation with Saruman is a great scene, and it eliminates the need to add yet another freakin' hour to the film for the Scouring of the Shire, but the romance between Faramir and Eowyn is dealt with so quickly it felt like an afterthought, and may as well have been left out. The confrontation between Gandalf and the Witch King is likewise an unnecessary quickie.

6. I haven't seen it ENOUGH to be certain....
But many of the additions are character amplification. See a Legolas/Gimli drinking contest! See Faramir & Eowyn get together! (That one could have been longer.)

There's lots of violence but it's really not bloody enough to be realistic--& remember that Orcs have black blood. (I'm glad that it's not bloody enough, by the way.) And some of the most frightening images aren't exactly violent--just nightmare-scary.

But it's got a happy ending! Actually, several happy endings! Well, more like a couple of happy endings & one bittersweet farewell....

7. Thanks everyone.
If I tell ZenLeftyGirl that there's more Eowyn romance in it, she'll sit through the violence no problem. :D
