who else likes to cower at home on New Years Eve?
I hate going out. It's always a let down. The crowds are unruly. It's expensive. It's fucking cold out and getting a cab is damn near impossible.

I'm going to stay home with Alex, the two kitties, and a few friends. And I'll probably pass out before midnight.

1. I've cowered for years
I'm thinking of stepping out this year.

I need to learn not to be afraid of people.

But they're so scary!

6. Me.
I worked swing shift for 7 years, so I missed several New Years Eve's when they fell on a work night.

Made up for it later. Didn't really get the whole going out on New Years thang.

Granted, there were a couple years of sucking face with every hot guy in the club, but all and all it was a bore.

Last year was fun, we were in Las Vegas. But this year, it's me, the ball and chain and the cats.

9. It's only fun to stay home if you have a mate.
Alone, it's fucking depressing. And yes, the options out of the house are equally unappealing. Either way it's gonna suck.

30. He was kind of a prick about it too.
I was all dressed and ready to go, and the phone rang. He told me decided he wanted to "go out with the guys" for NYE. Um, okay. And you waited until NOW to tell me? (It was 6:00 and he was supposed to pick me up at 6:30). Then he went on to say, "Well, I just don't think I want to have a girlfriend right now. I guess I'd rather break up now."

Oooookay. Jerkoff.

So I cried and got all messed up and puffy-eyed. I thought about drinking the blackberry brandy in my cupboard and decided against it. I took another shower to unpuff my eyes, got dressed and made up again, and sat in my kitchen chainsmoking until about 8:00, feeling very lonely and used up.

There was a bowling alley bar about a mile from my apartment. It was more nightclubby than most bowling alley bars, and I figured there might be at least a few people there I knew. And it was close enough that I could walk home if need be. So I went. I felt weird walking in ther on NYE all by myself, but the bouncer let me in for no cover charge. They had paper hats and noisemakers and all the attendant merrymaking equipment. I sat at the bar and ordered a drink. Shortly thereafter, I saw some guy I'd gone to high school with and told him my sob story. He and his friends decided to make it their business to cheer me up, which was nice. It still wasn't quite the same, though.

That's one boyfriend who made for-damn-sure I'd never forget him. I've been been dumped plenty in my day, but that one is in the top two for coldness.

32. Here's part of the speech my recent ex gave me at the breakup:
"You're a nice girl. You treated me well, you're the best-looking girl I've ever dated, and we had great sex. But I don't give a fuck about you. And it's not that I'm not ready, it's that YOU'RE NOT THE ONE."

Um. Ow. Okay.

33. Ouch! WHAT a jerk.
If it's any consolation, I've heard similar things myself. What, is there an Assholes Handbook somewhere? "Chapter 4: How To Break Up With Your Girlfriend In The Most Hurtful Way Possible."

"I know I said I love you, but I was caught up in the moment. I don't really love you."

and this lovely gem:

"You make great brownies. I'd marry your brownies, but I'm never going to be in love with you."

Get this book. I just read it last week and it's changed my life. He's Just Not That Into You . It's amazing. I'll probably be alone for the rest of my life, but at least I won't be with a shithead again.

I'm married now, but I spent SO many years with these jerks, assholes, and selfish creeps, trying to please them. Trying to change myself to please them. Thinking something was wrong with ME.

Wish you lived near here. We could have a good old fashioned women's night out.

38. Yup!
He actually IS a super-nice guy, he is everything those fucking assholes could never HOPE to be, and I'm glad every day that we crossed paths.

And he's such a nice guy that, if you were near here, he'd push me out the door, tell us to paint the town, and to stay out as late as we wanted and he'd get up early with the kids.

The last thing in the world I wanted when I met him was to get involved in yet another relationship. I know it sounds like a cliche, but it's true. I was sick to death of agonizing over relationships, getting hurt, and blaming myself. The last guy I dated before I met my husband was probably the inspiration for "He's Just Not That Into You."

Then I met D, and we stayed up almost all night at Perkins talking, and within a few days it was obvious that he was the real deal. He always told me, "I had no idea I wanted to get married until I met you." We've been married 7½ years.

12. Stay home, yes. Cower, no.
We plan on doing a "film festival" this year with the DVDs we got for Christmas. We'll also play board games and cards. I'm making our traditional NYE appetizers and finger foods - chili cheese pie, cocktail meatballs in the crockpot, smoked salmon, Chex Mix, cold cuts, and so forth. It's also one of the two or three times a year I allow myself to eat potato chips and French onion dip (I have to do that on NYE because it reminds me of happy New Year's Eves when I was growing up). If any of our friends want to come over, they are welcome. I don't know if any guests will drop by, but I did tell my husband to mention it at work today.

23. Me.
When I was on Active Duty, I always volunteered for New Years Eve/Day shifts, because nobody else wanted them.

I'd rather stay home...last year we played board games and got kinda drunk at a friend's place, and slept in the guest room. That's the ideal NY for me.

This year, without an SO, I think I'm just going to stay at home and watch TV...and enjoy watching 2004 crumble into dubious history.

24. I am cowering at someone else's house on NYE
Honestly, I can't think of the last time I was out in public on NYE, other than perhaps for dinner. I've toasted midnight from either my house or someone else's .... pretty much always. (My parents occasionally took us to a "fancy hotel" -- i.e. one with a pool -- for New Years, but that's about it.)
