Did anyone else see CBS news at noon? |
|
I am normally at work but I've been home 2 days with a horrible stomach virus. TV's been on for hours, wasn't paying attention until they reported that tourists are returning to the beach after the tsunami. They showed video of all these flabby white bodies tanning, swimming, playing frisbee etc. WHAT the hell is wrong with people? Anyone vacationing near any devastated areas should be helping with humanitarian efforts or going the hell home. I found myself wishing another wave would come and wash all these slobs into the ocean. Not good karma I know, but like I said I have been hurling for 2 days, forgive me. It took all the energy I had to drag myself to my computer to post this. Maybe now I can sleep.

their lack of empathy.... Anyone who cannot help with the rescue effort should get the hell out of there, becasue they are only in the way of those who are trying to help.

I'm always amazed at the amount of energy generated by being pissed off. I do usually try to turn it into something positive, but everybody's gotta vent, ya know?

6. They're performing an important job...spending money. |

Natural disasters devastate local economies. These tourists are helping the local economy.
I really don't see the problem. I wouldn't do it myself, but I have no problem if somebody else vacations there.

Look, it's not like these people would have been involved in any aid efforts anyway. At least their money is helping the local economy.
The people who do absolutely nothing are more worthy of attack than these tourists, IMHO.

12. Umm, I don't think there is a local economy anymore. |
|
But I do agree that people who do nothing are vile scum as well. I scraped up some money to send even though I'm barely getting by. I lost my job in January, blew threw my savings by June and had to take a job that pays less than 2/3 of my previous salary. Oh yeah, I also had to have a minor medical procedure done recently with NO health insurance so I'll be in debt to the hospital for a very long time. Yeah, I know. Life sucks, boo-hoo. I don't feel sorry for myself and neither should anyone else. But I reserve the right to wish these wankers much bad karma in the year to come.

13. The locals are opening shops and bars...that's a local economy. |

I do understand what you're saying, but I don't agree. Vacationing in a natural disaster area seems silly to me, but not morally repugnant.

Maybe I'm too sensitive but I cannot picture myself or anyone else with a heart, enjoying being pampered when so many have lost so much and whose lives will never be the same.

11. They are spending their tax cuts on goods and services |
|
It will help stimulate the local economy. It's better than giving them some type of aid or welfare. Sarcasm on

A) My brother had to work some shifts at the WTC after 9/11. He told me about the tents and kiosks that the Red Cross had set up with PlayStations, board games, DVDs and movies, etc. so that the workers wouldn't burn out on the awful jobs that they were doing. Does that bother you also? & B) Not to be blunt, but at some point, there's only so much to do in a situation like this. Meaning, I gather that in a lot of areas everything simply disappeared. What sort of work should these people be doing? If there's no food to distribute to survivors, what should these people de doing? And if there weren't any survivors, what should they be doing? (Especially if you're a banker or a model or something there for vacation. I certainly wouldn't expect Petra Nemcova to be figuring out how to divert streams to a village for fresh water or to be building my new hut. (And, frankly, wouldn't want her to, either. I'm guessing she doesn't have the best of construction skills.))

15. I totally agree with you |
|
It's sickening with so much suffering taking place, these people could actually relax and have fun. If I needed a time out it would be in the privacy of my room. I would be grieving too much to possibly be able to relax and take in the beautiful sun with so much misery around me. Sorry for your bad times - for you too, things will get better. Get well.

I just look at all of the suffering going on in the rest of the world. It's humbling. Also, I'd be pretty damned happy if I could quit waking up on the bathroom floor. Nasty virus. In my younger days, waking up on the bathroom floor was self-inflicted.
