CSPAN caller "His name sounds like 'Cheese Nachos'--I can't remember it." |
|
CSPAN Host: "Cisneros? Henry Cisneros?"
CSPAN Caller: "Uh, yeah, that's it. Anyway . . . "
------------------
True CSPAN exchange. I heard it myself. It may not be great, but it really happened.
That just about sums up the caliber of CSPAN callers, as far as I'm concerned.
I just wish someone were writing all these CSPAN exchanges down somewhere.

4. I wish they'd kill the call in portion of those shows |
|
I want to see the guest and hear them-not some rambling drunk who forgot to pull his or her head out before calling.

5. This will probably come off as judgemental or something... |
|
but the calls after the debates were all I needed to show me the caliber of some viewers. "They both made good points, but GW is a Christian, so I have to support him."
Yeah, well, you're a dumbass.

6. You know, I just thought of something |
|
The host figured it out! I think I would have been going "Who? It sounds like what?" Followed by "You're a dumbass!"
Maybe it's just me...

7. They had been talking about Clinton's cabinet members |
|
at the time. He had that mistress he had paid off (Cisneros did).
So there was some context for the host to figure out who "Cheese Nachos" was.
But still . . . Cheese Nachos?

8. Still...How can you call in to a show and be that stupid? |
|
I sed to work with a guy that everybody called Nacho. I finally asked him what his real name was...Ignacio, but the warehouse guys (his peers) couldn't say it, so he let them call him Nacho. Poor guy...I always called him Ignacio after I found out his real name.

9. I can't stand that "I can't pronounce that name" bullshit. |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-31-04 01:07 AM by DemBones DemBones
LISTEN to the person say it a few times and repeat it back to them until you get a reasonable approximation of the correct pronunciation instead of pulling the nickname trick. You may not pronounce "Ignacio" like someone whose native tongue is Spanish but you won't sound like a total dumbass who doesn't even try.
P.S. I had a similar experience in grad school. There was a Sri Lankan guy everyone, including the profs called Ana because they "couldn't pronounce" Anandas. I couldn't believe it when I found out what his name really was.

10. Well, I have an 11 letter first name that is not an |
|
everyday run of the mill name. No one can say it. I shorten it to make my life easier so I don't have to correct everybody else. If you don't take the time to learn someone's name, how interested are you in them, really?
