20. I was sorta showing off that time. |
|
It's not unusual to see that written entirely in hiragana. I had just installed that software earlier that day, and had been fooling around with it when I spotted this thread on DU. Here it is: http://shop.kanjikit.net/scripts/PSP/bin/showpage.dll I'm using it in a trivial way at present, but will eventually get around to RTFM. pnorman

畜生!! (??)
Win Xp has a package for Oriental language support in the install disk. But I had to buy the book from the above outfi,t to learn how to install it. After that, there was some sort of kanji capability, but I never quite got the hang of it. But after I installed the above mentioned programs (2 of them), it seemed to work out fine ... so far.
What sort of setup do you have at your end?

Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 09:11 AM by Art_from_Ark
I went to 環境設定 (Settings?) in my browser and set all the fonts to Japanese fonts (Osaka, Heisei Meichou). Seems to work now.
My system is Mac OS 10.2.8
By the way, 畜生 (chikushou) means "Drat!" or "Hang it all!" or worse, depending on, I guess, the tone of voice.

30. Aparently it didn't work in the subject line for you either. |
|
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 10:59 AM by pnorman
"畜生" seems to indicate something like "born of an animal" ("animal existence"?). So I guess it's akin to "son of a bitch". It's generally used as an expletive (of exasperation), rather than an epithet directed at a person. I know nothing about Chinese or Korean, but Japanese is remarkably deficient in cuss words. As you say, it's the tone of voice. A related expletive is: "エー糞" ("eh kuso")", which is something like "aw shit!".
I know absolutely nothing about Mac OS, other than it's supposed to have better Japanes language support than Windows. On a related note, I recently installed a Japanese language support in my PDA (Sony TH-55, Palm OS 5), that seems to work very nicely.
pnorman I just tested my Paul Wellstone sig-line, and it still works!! I've been passing it around for the past two years, and have watched it myself countless times. (I'll probably watch it again today).
On edit: I just realized you were referring to 七転び八起き, rather than my Paul Wellstone memorial link. It's a nice phrase, and well worth bearing in mind ... ESPECIALLY during the present times.

33. That's odd, because the Japanese characters show up in the subject line |
|
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 01:02 PM by Art_from_Ark
on my computer (Safari browser). I think it might have something to do with the font settings in your browser, although if you're using IE, it probably won't show up regardless. Heck, now I see that it doesn't even show up on my Japanese version of IE.
Anyway, I think Mac does have better Japanese language support. In fact, with the OS 10.2 system, you can change the language of the operating system just by selecting a new language (18 languages available) and restarting the computer. Pretty cool.

I lived there for 6 years, and found myself wishing I was there for the New Year's celebration.
What a wonderful time to be there. I got an e-mail from one of my best friends, whose home is in my old neighborhood. His house is buried in snow. . .
Ahhhh, to have some oden and some "Eisen" sake from Aizu right now. . .
Happy New Year!
