FEARS are growing for the safety of penguins on Granite Island after reports that one of the birds was killed at a party earlier this month.

If proven, it would be the second time a penguin has been taken from the island off South Australia's Victor Harbor in a week.

Police found another fairy penguin in a car involved in an accident near Adelaide last week.

The penguin chick is recovering at the Granite Island Penguin Centre.

Authorities also reported a penguin burrow being set alight on the island during Schoolies Week.

Penguin Centre environment manager Natalie Gilbert said penguin killing on the island was rife four years ago but the situation had improved since security guards began patrolling the region.

They had to hire security guards to protect an endangered species? People are SO effed up I can hardly stand it sometimes.
