I think my apartment building is on fire! |
|
I have no idea...it is one of those art deco buildings that were built in the 20's. There is a fire truck outside and I can hear a faint speaker. I don't know what it is saying, and I don't know what to do...I'm afraid if I leave, I won't be allowed back in the area. I am going to see what the hell is going on...I hope to be back soon.

Unless you have to. It acts like a flue and drafts the fire in your direction. Get out! Fast!

The apartment NEXT to mine burned up last year. I only had time to grab my parrot and leave. Another bird and fourteen reptiles were in the apt. A fireman snatched the other bird after awhile.
But it was hella scary! There was particulate matter all over everything when we were allowed back inside.
Before that building 1 in my complex was half-gutted. :(
I hope everything is OK. The good news is if they catch it early enough, it can be contained to one apartment.

11. See if the firemen will let you help them out. |

They carry a few extra axes for that sort of thing. Really.

17. you really think the place might be on fire, and you're STILL IN THERE? |
|
Sannum, what are you thinking?
I hope this is a false alarm, but let's assume it's not:
If you hear a smoke alarm somewhere in the building, you need to get out. If you can hear a smoke alarm in another apartment, but the building's fire alarm system is silent, then the smoke alarm may be one of those non-wired battery-operated models, and whoever noticed it first telephoned the fire department. A smoke alarm wired into the house current is supposed to trigger the other alarms in the building, and in some buildings, the main alarm system automatically summons help. If your building lacks an integrated fire detection system, then your landlord needs jailing.
If you think there might be a fire, take just a split second to close any open windows in your apartment (only if you can do it quickly -- helps to retard spread of fire); get any family and pets that are with you; shut your apartment door behind you (also helps to retard spread of fire) and leave the building by the closest exit. If you encounter a doorknob that feels hot to the touch, do NOT open that door. If you encounter smoke, get low and stay low -- that is, crawl.
And if you've actually read this far, Sannum, why are you still here?!?!?
