Sondheim, a Celebration at Carnegie Hall |
|
If you have never seen this and have any interest in musical theater, you must rent it or buy it. If you think you might like Soneheim, but aren't sure you want to sit through a whole show to find out, get this tape. It is a group of absolute STARS of the theater community singing his best work.
There are a few things I would have like to see added, the tape could be two hours longer as far as I am concerned.
Just Dorothy Louden singing "You could make a person Crazy" is worth the price, but you also get Bernadette Peters doing "Not a Day goes By" and Patti Lapone singing "Being Alive".
Then there is Victor Garber and Patrick Cassidy doing a duet from Assasins. If you only know Garber from TV, you should see him on stage. He is one of the ultimate male superstars of Stage performance. He manages to make you feel a bit sorry for John Wilkes Booth if only for a moment before his song ends.
Of course the star of the evening is Sondeims work. For those of who like performing there is nothing more challenging and satisfying than performing his work.
See it!

This is probably a very good one, with good actors and singers.
Just one pause though: I thought Nancy LaMott (deceased) punched it right with passion in "Not a Day Goes By" moreso than Peters' interpretation.
For those of you who can hear Jonathon Schwartz's show in NYC, he plays a lot of these tunes, including those by LaMott. On XM Radio, he created channel 73, "Frank's Place".
