This past weekend, I saw most of this movie for the first time. I fell asleep before it ended, though, so I don't know how it turned out. :spank:
The concept of two people, married (but not to each other), meeting on the same weekend each year for 26 years is kinda weird. Does anyone believe this is possible? Although I do believe in the whole soul-mate thing, I think it would be hard to keep up for so many years.
Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn were great, and it was nice to see Alda play someone other than Hawkeye Pierce, who I came to despise as the years rolled on during M*A*S*H.
Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts on this movie? Can anyone tell me how it ended?

1. Pulls out his calender.....How is the second weekend in February for you? |
|
:bounce:
I think at the end it ends. I saw it a long time ago but I think at the end they realize it is over and foolish.

6. Let's schedule this when the weather is better. |
|
Travel is always so iffy during the winter. I'd hate to have it cancelled due to inclement weather! :D

5. It was on Saturday night, on AMC, I think. |
|
I fell asleep during the 1972 segment, where she was a successful businesswoman, and he was playing piano in a cocktail lounge. So, did they break up, did one of them die, or what? I'm dying to know!!! ;)

7. Nope....this is how it ends |
|
Alan Alda's wife dies. He shows up to tell Ellen Burstyn this and that he cannot continue this way anymore as he has a new girlfriend that knows all about his yearly meetings. He tells her that he must choose between her and the new girlfriend and he would prefer her (Ellen).
Ellen declines as she has become closer to her husband over the years and cannot leave him. Allan says: I understand and I can't see you anymore and walks out the door. Ellen predictably collapses in tears. Moments later Alda bursts back into the room and tells her that is was basically a lie...there is no other girlfriend!! After much kissing and laughter, Johnny Mathis' voice croons as the credits role. (I really loved that song and especially how it was juxtaposed against historical photographs throughout the movie).
Yes, I loved the movie too and I firmly believe this can happen. I have loved 2 women for about 10 years so far.

12. Why does Alda do this? Why does he fake her out like that? |
|
Or is that just something he "didn't think through", to quote him?

13. thats exactly what he said |
|
I didn't think it through. It was a power play to get her to leave her husband and when it didn't work, he had to admit his deception

10. I had a massive discussion about this movie once. |
|
Oddly enough with a man I seriously contemplated becoming physically involved with before I had yet decided that, yes, I really wanted to end my marriage. I have a hard time with it truly. If their spouses knew and everything was in the open, some people and some partners can handle that whole polyamoury thing. I'm not really one of those people. It jumbles up my brain in all honesty to have a sexual involvement with more than one person at a time (even if one of the sexual relationships was entirely cerebral in nature) which is an odd dichotomy considering certain aspects of myself, but that's a bit of a digression.
For the characters in the movie though, they weren't being honest with their spouses. It may have made them "feel" better or brought some extra life into their lives, but how would their spouses feel? What about the person you allegedly love and committed yourself to? Unless it's out in the open, it's wrong. Period. I can understand how it can happen and the forces that can drive it to happen, but it doesn't make it right.
I don't remember how the movie ended.
