The greatest rock bands, by time period
Starting out in 1964 ('cause there were so few notable British bands prior to 1964), and excluding solo artists:

British, 1964-68: The Beatles
British, 1969-1971: The Rolling Stones (with The Who very, very, very close behind)
British, 1972-1975: Led Zep
British, 1976: Pink Floyd
British, 1977-1982: The Clash
British, 1983- I'm not sure. Need some help here.

American, 1964-1966: The Byrds
American, 1967-68: The Velvet Underground
American, 1969-1970: Creedence Clearwater Revival
American, 1971-1972: Sly and the Family Stone (Grateful Dead close 2nd)
American, 1973-1976: Not sure (Lynryd Skynyrd? Allmans?)
American, 1977-1979: The Ramones
American, 1980-1983: Talking Heads
American, 1984-1987: REM
American, 1988-1992: Sonic Youth
American, 1993-1994: Nirvana
American, 1995-present (Not sure)

I was looking at the years, not at the nationality. Sorry 'bout that.
American music during the mid-90s was really kind of a wasteland. That was when British bands started to come back, like Oasis or Radiohead. So that's a tough one to figure out. Maybe...Built to Spill?

4. Hmm
Is this is your own personal list or this on a site somewhere? I could never pick any greatest anything because I like so many different bands/artists and various genres. Good picks by the way.

9. I think the greatest American rock band of all time was Skynyrd
but that is just one man's opinion.

11. I definitely think they were the best of the "southern rock" genre.
The cream of the crop. Little Feat were second, and the Allman Brothers Band a distant third.

20. An opinion we share
A well-disciplined group, finely written songs, a charismatic vocalist, and heartfelt arrangements... none finer.

10. I disagree because
#1 Record was recorded in 1972, and Radio City in 1973, and Sister Lovers in 1974 (when they were really just two guys, not a real band anymore). After that, they didn't exist in a form.

14. Well, okay
But they did record in that time span (the singer-songwriter "tortured troubador" era), and their influence was felt both at the time and after.

24. My list is based on a heavyweight boxing title methodology
Certain bands wore the mantle of The Greatest Rock n'Roll Band at certain times. For example, from 1969-1971, the Stones were untouchable. They released three or four of the greatest albums ever, and their live act was second-to-none, except for maybe the Who. Though the Beatles did record in 1969 and 1970, I consider Let It Be and Abbey Road not as great as Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile. Plus, the Beatles were fracturing as a band, and, of course, didn't tour.

I just upgraded to an SACD version of #1 Record/Radio City. Great rock and roll.

Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 01:52 PM by ZombyWoof
Yes, Skynyrd from 1973-1977. The Allmans peaked during 1971-1973. The Allmans were the best American band after CCR, and Skynyrd was the best American band after the Allmans until 1977, then I would say ZZ Top after them, until at least 1983. Then Los Lobos from 1983-1992, then Pearl Jam 1992-1995, then Gov't Mule from there on...

30. You forgot a couple
American 1973-1976 Shouldn't the Eagles and/or Bruce and the E-Street Band be in there?

British 1977 Sex Pistols would be my choice then the Clash for 1978-82.

British 1983-1987 Peter Gabriel and/or the Pretenders (for Learning to Crawl)? Also, U2 is Irish, not British but can they be included?

31. I was thinking about Springsteen
I was trying to limit it to bands. But if consider his relationship with the E.St.Band as being more than just the backing band to a solo artist, then yeah, definitely he is in there 1975-1980, and would knock a couple years off Talking Head's reign. U2, if considered British, would dominate the 1980's and 90's in the UK category.
