This fish is freaking me out!!

from Reuters . . .

One of two 19-year-old fish with human-like facial features in Chongju, about 140 km (88 miles) south of Seoul on January 10, 2005. The hybrid species fish were born between a carp and a leather carp in the pond of a personal house in Chongju. Each of the two female fish is 80 cm (32 inches) long and 50 cm (20 inches) in circumference. The owner of the fish said on Monday that their faces have begun to look more and more human over the last couple of years. Picture taken January 10. REUTERS/Chungcheong Today

One thing is that its eyes are in the front
and not on the sides like most animals.

13. No, I think it's the nose.
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 06:15 PM by NYC
The Shroud of Turin is not that impressive to me. But what fish has a nose like a human? That one seems to.

Edit: And the eyes facing forward, with almost a brow ridge. If you think about it, you can almost imagine eyebrows above those eyes. I think the nose is the most strikingly humanlike feature.

16. Those aren't its eyes.
Look again. It has eyes on the side of its head. It has wide nostrils (nares) which look like eyes in the picture.

21. But fish don't have nostrils.
They breathe through gills.

Perhaps just markings? They look like eyes to me.

23. Fish do have nostrils-they're called nares
They don't act in breathing, they just let water through to the olfactory membrane

or eyes that look like eyes straddling the human looking nose?

15. Jerusalem Cricket.
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 06:22 PM by NYC
Jerusalem Crickets attract a lot of attention because of their large size, and their round, bald head; in fact, in some places they are called "child of the earth" because of their semi-human appearance.

The picture doesn't show a face.

17. Jerusalem Cricket = Potato Bug.
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 06:24 PM by NYC
Someone posted a really hideous picture of a potato bug several months back.

http://waynesword.palomar.edu/redmite.htm

The Jerusalem cricket or potato bug (Stenopelmatus sp.) is one of the largest insects in southern California, often exceeding two inches (50 mm) in length. It belongs to the Order Orthoptera along with grasshoppers, katydids and true crickets. This cricket relative is actually capable of making a rudimentary sound by rubbing the inner surface of its hind leg against short spines projecting from the side of its abdomen. Because of its large, bald "baby face," it is also known as "child of the earth" or "ñina de la tierra." Its large size and humanoid head has caused this insect to be the object of superstition and fear by some southwestern and Mexican Indians. Navajo people call it "woh-seh-tsinni," which means "old bald-headed man." Although the strong mandibles can inflict a painful bite, Jerusalem crickets are not poisonous. With their strong legs and jaws, they burrow into the soil and feed primarily on roots and tubers. They may also feed on dead insects and debris, and may be predatory at times. Although they may occasionally chew on potatoes, they are not a serious crop pest like the true potato beetle. Sometimes they come out of the ground at night and wander around houses. These curious insects are harmless and should not be killed. Please allow them to crawl into a container and let them go free in your garden.
