I kinda liked the original version (largely devoid of anti-feminist histrionics) but hated the re-make. Both versions were made by the same woman, an Australian named Charlene Duncan, though the song itself was written by two men, Ken Kirsch and Ronald Miller.
I posted a fairly long piece about it here a while back under my old Nom de DU of BareKnuckledLiberal.
The original "message" of the song (strongly) seemed to be about the futility of running away from oneself; Ms. Duncan evidently got religion and spun her second try as a broadside against a woman living as anything other than a "surrendered wife."
