...is to get a good running start.
That being said, the Red is positive, and the Black is negative.
Make sure to turn off any radios, especially two way ones, before jumping, or being jumped.

just got back from the mechanic's and it is currently getting a new battery. Hopefully that is the only thing wrong with my car

They suggest attaching the negative last, away from the battery (like on the grounded frame of the car) to reduce the chance of accidently igniting hydrogen that might be coming from a discharged battery. Even better, I think they recommend connecting the last cable (when you get some sparking) on the frame of the car w/ the good battery.
