If the FCC and the tv industry force people to switch in 2006, will you? |
|
I always thought it odd that Steven "I'm greedy but I have no vision" Speilberg was holding off on the GOOD Star Wars trilogy until 2006, while everybody else is selling VHS and DVDs of their series right now.
It just dawned on me why.
In 2006, the FCC is FORCING (a rather willing) industry to switch to HDTV broadcast format. This format includes a "broadcast flag" as all new HDTV equipment contains a decoder (you early adopters might be SOL...). Without the HDTV monitor 'seeing' the broadcast flag, you're not going to see anything at all. This means your existing VHS collections (notice how VHS is currently in its death-knell as well, with fewer VCR machines for sale of decreasing quality along with fewer movies being released in this format.) The HDTV signal is also scrambled, meaning you can't record episodes to trade with friends or to watch in later viewings because they want you (provided they choose to do so) to buy the eventual product home video release.
Fucking fascists, I will NOT capitulate. I will stock up on standard NTSC equipment and live without when the time comes if I have to.
But people kept buying Windows XP despite its fascistness, so people will fall for the media industry as well.

2. They'll have to pull my analog signal |
|
out of my cold dead hands!!
My wife, who is normally not engrossed with technical issues, finds blocking the recording of TV shows absolutely apalling.
I think a lot of normally apolitical folks may get very excied when they find they can't record their favorite TV shows like they used to.
Die DRM, die!
