Help! Somebody explain "pilates" to me. |
|
. It's nothing like yoga, right? Or is it?
As far as I could tell, "spinning" was riding a stationary bike, essentially.
So what's the deal on "pilates?"

1. Yes, it's very similar to Yoga, but more intense. |

It's what they call "core strengthening" - the stomach muscles, lower and upper abs. Check out: http://www.pilatesinsight.com/pilates/pilates-history.aspx

http://www.pilatesmethodalliance.org/whatis.htmlAlso, Pilates is usually capitalized; it's the last name of the man who developed the method.

4. Pilates is more of a traditional exercize than Yoga. As in you're moving |
|
rythmically in fast motions.
Yoga is more about slow posing and stretching.

16. No it isn't dancing at all |
|
it's just routines of using your own body in different ways to work different muscles you normally don't and burn different fat stores in different ways.

17. It's actually popular among dancers, because it |
|
tends to lengthen the muscles rather than bulking them up.
I really enjoy Pilates.

for injured dancers originally - a sort of rehab after an injury or operation. A ballet dancer friend introduced me to it in the 70's. Unfortunately, I didn't stay with it.

10. They sail the "high seas" under the "Jolly Roger" flag in order to |
|
fight other, unsuspecting, sea-faring vessels and steal their "loot," aka "swag."
See Errol Flynn, Johnny Depp.

Pilates to me doesn't require all that mumbo jumbo tranquility and crap that they preach in Yoga.

like yoga using your muscles as the resistance instead of weights. Remember leg lifts and crunches? That same type of thing...for toning not cardio...

I've been doing Pilates off and on for a few years now, recently more intensely. I really like it. I also practice yoga. :hi:
