I want to go to a movie tonight ... which one ? |
|
I simply cannot stay home and watch the talking heads gush over Cokeboy, and have been spending far, far too much time online in the past few weeks.
Any kickass must-see movies out ?
Thanks!

If it's playing near you, TARNATION is very good. In one scene (not to spoil the whole thing), the narrator/protagonist stages a musical of David Lynch's BLUE VELVET, at age 17, in HOUSTON.
Also very good: Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp in FINDING NEVERLAND.
Have fun!

As more people see Tarnation, we should discuss it. Jonathan basically raised himself. I wonder if he will have any of the mental problems that plague his mom.

14. I don't know if he will, but I hope not. |
|
His poor mother was not very well served by her parents, seems like.
I also hope he does some more films, and that more theaters get brave enough to show them.

18. Watching that movie took me back to an incident my |
|
mom told me about. When I was a toddler I would sit in a doorway with one leg on each side and just bang my head. I did not talk. My dad thought I was retarded and said to my mom, "I think we need to take that one to a psychiatrist, I think it's retarded."
I don't know why they did not pursue a psychiatrist but given that it was the mid 1960s (and ESPECIALLY after seeing Tarnation) I am HAPPY that they did not. What I think the problem may have been is a form of autism but I am not sure. I still tend to rock and such and my social skills aren't all that good, particularly in person. I am much better communicating online and in letters.
I feel for Jonathan's mom because it sounds like she was not psychotic until all of the shock therapy treatments. She may have been depressed but not psychotic.

25. You just hang in there, ikojo. Your story tells me that -- |
|
-- you have had to be brave and keen.
I hope you enjoy enough support in your life right now to make you feel "belonged."
I'll look forward to reading your posts on DU.

Chance the Gardener AKA the potus. "Silver City" features Chris Cooper nailing down the chimp very nicely.

9. I enjoyed "The Life Aquatic." |
|
It's been getting mixed reviews, but that's mostly because the director has previously set a really high bar for himself.
I've heard good things about "The Aviator," but I haven't seen it myself to vouch.
Have fun at the movies.
