Question for Star Wars purists...
Did they ever make a good DVD release of the original trilogy? Or is the best bet still to watch the (shudder) videos?

3. Damn - there's even a petition drive for this
"Currently, you (Lucas) have no plans to release the original theatrical cuts of Episodes IV, V, and VI on DVD."

http://www.petitiononline.com/OTondvd/petition.html

So I guess the answer is no.

13. "Original theatrical cuts"
What this means is that they intend to release the digitally enhanced Special Edition cuts that were released theatrically in 1997.

It'll be a few years, but you will be able to see Episode IV on DVD. But Greedo will always shoot first.

11. 1999
I picked up the LD set, though I could afford the silver set and not the gold set. The gold set was in CLV format and the silver set in SLV (?),. the lower quality one.

While my player still works (but won't flip sides anymore) I should digitize and convert the LDs to DVD before the player itself dies.

16. I'm in the same boat...
Though my LDs are Widescreen individually packaged versions. My LD player doesn't have much time left, I'm afraid - particularly since I have some really great LDs, some of which haven't been issued on DVD.

I hear they have a name for the next movie

Episode III: It Better Not Suck As Bad As The Last Two

7. 2006 - the same year everybody has to switch to HDTV
Unfortunately, HDTV transmissions will be copy protected via a broadcast flag so you can't record tv shows for future viewings. You will have to rely on the overlord company to release their programs on whatever format supports the broadcast flag.

Your VHS tapes may not be playable. Ditto for current DVDs, which are protected by a different form of copy protection.

The FCC is enforcing this change to enact in 2006.

Oh yeah, early and current HDTV adopters may be SOL and have to spend more $$$ for a new set if their current sets cannot be upgraded.

12. I wouldn't do that...
Piracy is big in Asia and Microsoft and the MPAA are going after everybody out there.

15. unfortunately its the only way to get the original Trilogy
Lucas will only release a completely mangled version on them after the prequels are released.
