6 weeks since i've stopped eating fastfood
Ok, just an update for those of you who encouraged me back in December. I still haven't weighed myself but i've gone down almost 2 sizes. I've lost 3 inches off my waist and 2 off my hips. My daughter who is 10 lost 5 lbs. She wasn't heavy but had a bit of a belly, she stopped eating FF after watching Supersize Me, it made her sick. Ok, so i feel much better, i got some energy back, the 1st 2 weeks had me feeling pretty tired but i've rebounded. I will update in another month.

1. yay. I did something similar after leaving college in May.
I adjusted my diet because I didn't want to gain 30 pounds like my dad said he did after graduating. Without walking several miles each day, I had to cut back my caloric intake drastically.

I'm glad to see the film had such an impact on others. Live long and prosper (since you're now less likely to contract related illnesses and will not be spending so much money)!

2. Yay! Good for you.
Losing weight is no small task for a lot of people, but it sounds like you're doing well. I'm glad to hear that your daughter is getting in better shape as well, since starting out life in good physical condition makes it easier to stay that way in 20-30 years.

Right now I'm off to the gym myself. Good luck!

3. Only fast food I eat is a monthly craving I have for Arby's Roast Beef
Which I allow myself no more than 1 time a month.

Otherwise - I don't eat fast food.

However, junk food, another storry

;cry:

19. Roast beef is supposed to be "the best" of fast food
Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 02:26 PM by Patiod
I wish there were any Arby's around me. Oddly enough, the only Arby's I ever eat is when I'm heading towards Wilmington, I'll stop at the one in Painter's Crossing just above the border.

Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 01:37 PM by onecent
to drive into a larger town to get this. My son said after seeing this movie you won't eat at a ff place ever again.

I can't wait to see if - need to shed a few after the holidays.

Congrats!

7. Make sure you watch the extras, especially the interview with
Eric Schlosser, the author of "Fast Food nation", thats the part that really got me, he said the goverment allows parts from up to 1,000 different cows to be in one ff burger.

9. get rid of your local video store and go to Net Flix
First, Net Flix is a blue company (aka - they donate to blue causes).

Second - they have all films including very hard to find

Third - NO LATE FEES. Get 3 movies, watch 3 movies, return 3 movies, get 3 more movies

Finally - Even I, an apartment dweller have no problem with this service since the DVDs come in their own sleave that has a return envelope so my final cost for this services is a whopping $18/month or about 5 video rentals from my local store!

18. I've been Netflixing for over a year now.
It is great. I especially love the huge selection of independent and foreign films, since they don't stay in the theater very long and we don't get ourselves out to the movies all that often.

26. I've been thinking about getting Netflix.
We rarely ever rent movies, but we buy them on DirecTV at about 3.99 a pop. We could watch a lot more movies if we had Netflix!

10. The problem is, if you stop eating fast food
and start eating something like mac & cheese or frozen pizza, you're not getting any net benefit. I know several people who did exactly that.

8. thanks for posting. I'm also going to try and give up the fast food
I stopped eating those lean cuisine tv dinners at work and started eating value meals at mcdonalds because I have to hop between 4 different sites . I gained 12 pounds in a month and a half.

I'm back to eating the lean cuisines again and I've lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks.

28. If you're not used to veggie burgers
the "All American Burger" by Boca tastes the most like a real burger, the Boca Original Vegan is pertty decent, too, but probably takes a bit more geting used to. Amy's texas burger doesn't taste like a burger at all but it's barbecue flavored and has good tecture, so it makes a great sandwich if you dress it well.

Most meat eaters overcook a veggie burger. You can eat it as soon as it's warmed up all the way, if you cook it too long it will be proably be dry and rubbery.

11. Great move--particularly since fast food sucks, anyway.
Tastes bad, you are hungry an hour later, and does a number on your digestive tract which becomes really obvious once you stop eating it.

Nice to lose weight giving up something that you really don't need or want, isn't it?

14. This was from SuperSize Me

That film does a lot in 90 minutes to counter all of the marketing that FF companies have done for decades.

15. I try and get everyone i know to watch it
my daughter told some of her friends about it and they watched it with their parents. One of her very good friends is very overweight, she's a wonderful girl and her weight really depresses her. She watched it 2 weeks ago with her mom and grandma and stopped eating FF as well, the little girl has already lost some weight.

17. Here is a heartbreaking article about the real cost of FF
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/25/nyregion/25wide.html

snip
I stopped trying to find anything because there's nothing healthy to eat around here," lamented a woman who would give her name only as Miss David and who works at Public School 25. "I was once buying coffee at the Dunkin' Donuts, and I saw a chubby young guy ordering a bacon something for breakfast. Two of them. That scared me."

The devastating results of poor diet, no exercise and lots of stress are increasingly scaring health advocates in poor communities across the city. Diabetes is now the city's fourth leading cause of death. In neighborhoods where homicide or AIDS were the leading killers among young men and women a decade ago, heart disease and obesity are claiming ever more lives.
...
"It is a truly bizarre situation where food itself makes you sick," said Chris Norwood, the executive director of Health People, a community health education group whose office is just off East 149th Street. "Throughout history, getting enough food to stay well was usually the challenge. Then again, most of this stuff is not food."

22. Were you eating a lot of it? We just had some McD's.
I must have missed that whole thing in December.

Hmm.

So my arteries are clogged, different cows went into my burger, and I'm probably going to die of diabetes.

24. Good for you!
I don't think I will ever give up fast food completely, but for me it's a pretty rare treat (and McDonald's itself even more rare - like one McGriddle a year). McDonald's has always been at the bottom of the list of fast food places I'd go.

25. Good for you...
Personally however, as far as Supersize Me goes, I think the film is crap.

While it is interesting, I think junk food is OK if you eat it infrequently. Of course it's bad for you if you eat it for every meal (which I seriously doubt the main character in Supersize Me did); but look at the guy that they featured who ate a bazillion Big Macs, he didn't seem overly unhealthy. It's all about personal responsibility and personal metabolism.

Do the fast food companies engage in sinister marketing to get more eaters? Yes. Duh. That's sort of what they do. It's your job to say "No, I ate McDonalds last week" or "I should go to Subway(TM)!". Incidentally, I did love Supersize Me in the way I love most commercials. And this was the best Subway commercial yet! I mean come on... Subway is the only one shown in a positive light and not once are the health stats on Subway put up. How much did Subway kick in I wonder?
