But let the kids be kinky after they can move out and support themselves. When I still pay the bills, no oral cavity veneral disease

By middle school, every kid should know about contraception, bodily functions of both genders, the many ways STDs can be transmitted, and emotional ramifications of becoming sexual. I don't believe in stigmatizing sexuality, but being very honest and forthcoming. We all make these decisions for ourselves. My parents weren't there when I made those decisions. I would prefer my daughter (and my boys later) wait until they're at least 18, but if they do not, I want them to be well prepared and know they can rely on me to help them and give them information, not call them names.

Wouldn't having parents with extremely critical and negative attitudes toward sexuality make you less likely to ask them for help when you need it? My oldest knows sex is a serious thing with many potential consequences, but sexual feelings are a normal part of maturing. When the time comes (hopefully not for quite awhile), she knows I can be a reliable adult that will help her. She even says to me, "Mom, I'm so lucky to have a mom I can talk to. Most of my friends don't have that." I mean, there's a line where you don't want to treat your children as a friend and you still need to be the authority, but keeping an open line of communication is so important.

in the 90's and I'd be hard pressed to name a person that I knew *wasn't* having oral sex or intercourse. I was literally one of the last people to have sex in my class because I waited until I was almost seventeen. I was ridiculed for that. Now kids are having sex in middle school.

Studies on those "abstinence vow" groups indicate that, while they do delay sexual intercourse (I believe it was a matter of a few months later than other teens, on average) they are far less likely to use protection when they DO have sex, so they have a higher rate of contracting STDs and of unwanted pregnancy.

Seems pretty low. Maybe they mean on a regular basis.
I am a parent and will be happy for my boys when they have girlfriends, and I don't really care what they do, so long as they use protection without fail.
Teenagers are sexual beings. Telling them to wait until some arbitrary age or marriage is hypocritical. They will know when they are ready.

83. That is low compared to when I grew up... |

...back in the '70s! (Wistful sigh here.)
OK parents: Pick out nine of your kid's friends. If none of them are having sex, it's YOURS!

...of how statistics are meaningless. "High School" usually means 9-12 grades. 13% having sex would be high for a 9th grade class, but low for seniors--this is probably why some of you are saying that number sounds too low, others just the opposite. The difference between a 14-year-old and a 19-year-old when it comes to this stuff is immeasurably huge, so without an accompanying bar graph that breaks it down by age, there's no way to interpret this.
It also might be useful to see things broken down by gender (disproportionate affirmatives among males at one school would indicate that there are just a few select girls that everyone takes turns banging), or by circumstances, i.e. are these kids having sex with their boyfriend/girlfriend, or just anybody? In my H.S., pretty much everybody who had sex did so within relationships. The funny thing about that is, the cool kids never officially "dated" for long periods of time, just hooked up at parties, and it was the less cool kids who had long-term relationships with each other... So by graduation day, a significantly higher percentage of uncool kids had had sex than cool kids.

85. First of all, those numbers sound AWFULLY low |
|
secondly, what's wrong with these kids? When I was in high school, in the mid-80s, we thought oral sex was just plain gross. Sure, it was engaged in from time to time, but for the most part? No.
To us, it was far more intimate than "just sex."
Guess things have changed.

I have to say I'm surprised, I thought the numbers would be higher. I'm happy they arent. Actually I get it now: it may seem low but it gets higher as they go on from grade to grade.

90. As long as they're safe about it, good for them! |
|
Within limits, of course :)
I had sex as a teenager, and I turned out to be a good person, a well paid professional, and a great parent. No harm done.
So long as the kids are taking care to prevent pregnancy and veneral disease, I say let them play.

I wonder if their research has any "teeth" in it.

96. I find it repulsive that they had to drag Clinton into this.... |
|
For Pete's sake, this has been going on forever. You'd think Clinton was the first person to ever have received fellatio, and Monica was the first to ever administer such....:eyes:
The figures are low, and for all of the insanity of those reporting this...let us here if THEY ever indulged, or still do...
Why can't they just leave 'morality' to the parents and the kids, there are FAR worse things happening in the world. And with this in the forefront...just what new screwing is the bush admin planning for the nation; I'm sure this is smoke and mirrors for some horrendous new agenda....x(

Wow. When I graduated in hmmmmmm well a long time ago it was much higher. Unless those girls got pregnant some other way...
Actually: it's probably about the same percentage total, but fewer are having intercourse. I guess that's better.
