Kids grow up too fast anyway these days. God let them be kids instead of little sex dolls. I know teenage boys, (I was once one myself) and I wouldn't encourage my daughter to flaunt around in something like that--in front of them or any male adult.

Leave it the right-wingers to run a picture of a (nearly) topless 16 year-old girl and pass it off as some kind of "news" story. The picture doesn't enhance the article, but rather the article was written to run the picture. A Republican family-values newspaper at it's finest.

Man, I'm no prude, but that's just not a dress. That's two straps and an attached skirt. Can't the girls who want that look just use a couple of shoestrings and save $500?
Who pays that much for a prom dress, anyway? That's a hell of a lot of money for a dress that'll probably be worn once and that you'll spend the whole night falling out of.
Years later, the girls who are unwise enough to wear this "dress" will look at the pictures and shudder in horror. "WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING? WHAT THE HELL WAS MY MOTHER THINKING, TO NOT TELL ME I LOOKED LIKE A STREETWALKER?"

45. "Streakers" threatened our prom and it was canceled... |
|
This was back in the 'seventies, and it wasn't just the guys who were streaking.
Kids wore some pretty wild stuff at graduation too. I don't think anyone actually purchased outfits especially for graduation.
Shredded blue jeans and t-shirts were pretty common. One of my friends wore a "granny" dress made of some flimsy fabric, and I mean that is *all* she wore, no shoes or underwear or anything else. (She always had the toughest feet...)
A couple of kids wore swim suits.
There are three sad things about this story: that kids feel pressure to buy expensive prom clothes, that girls feel such pressure to be "sexy" at their proms, and the saddest thing of all -- that someone would design a dress like this as a promotional stunt.
I'm probably too old, and especially sensitive as a parent of teenagers, but I think "sexy" is something that should just happen. Buying a $495 prom dress won't make it happen.
The story I imagined when I first saw this picture was some creepy old rich guy buying this dress for his stepdaughter...

I don't think many girls would want to wear a dress like that to a prom.
Like some of them said, it isn't practical and costs too much. I give the kids more kudos for common sense than I do for the designers.
I feel that this is much to do about nothing since no one wants to wear it anyway.
The girl in the picture is not wearing it like it was designed to be worn I think. It looks like something to sell papers.

|
This prom dress is so skimpy, even the designer's CEO wouldn't let his teenage daughter wear it. But the dangerously revealing gown, prominently advertised in Seventeen Prom, YM Prom and Teen Prom, and on sale in a Midtown shop, is a top seller for the company this season.
"I was shocked when I first saw it, but now it's one of our top 20 dresses nationwide," says Nick Yeh, the CEO of Xcite, the Stafford, Texas, company that designed the dress and some 200 other styles this season.
"I have a 15-year-old daughter and, no, I would not recommend she wear this dress.

"only if she wanted to raped" "slut" "only if she wanted to get fucked easilly"
since when does wearing anything mean you're a slut, or a looking to get raped? if you feel like wearing a shoelace and nothing else then that doesn't actually have anything to do with sexual assault or morality.
This is an ugly dress - not because of the boobage, but because it looks like something out of Dynasty, but if your kid could pay for it themselves there's NO WAY in hell any parent could stop them wearing it - I went to school with tonnes of girls with strict parents - they just came to school early and got changed/put on make-up in the toilets.

because in most of the "sexist" threads I'm on the "other" side and getting flamed by all the feminists, but in this day and age the hoary old theory of "revealing clothes = easy sex" should have been well and truly put to sleep

85. agree, i think the dress is ugly |
|
although the other styles of it i saw do look better than this one.
but regardless of the dress , nobody deserves to be raped or sexually violated in any way because of how they dress.
and it's naive to think you can tell a person's sex life based on the clothes they wear.

I already wrote my rants on the other thread about this. What a person wear does not constitute consent for sex- logically or LEGALLY.

I wish girls were dressed like that at my prom. This is coming from a hormonal male in his early 20's, so I doubt female or more aged DUers will echo my sentiments.

I would allow my daughter to wear that to prom. Under ideal conditions. And here are those conditions:
1. She wears the dress, but also writes "It's my body and I have the right to wear whatever I like and it doesn't mean I'm not also really really smart" on her exposed belly in black magic marker.
2. Her boyfriend ALSO wears the dress, and he writes "How come it's funny when I do it, but you're all judging her" on his exposed belly in black magic marker.
To clarify: I wouldn't *make* her write all that stuff etc., but I would suggest it, and since it's *my* daughter she'd probably agree that it would be cool.
By the way, I don't have a daughter.

130. If you wear it right, that dress is kinda cute |
|
The "right way" to wear it, of course, is with a nice white sleeveless top under it. Without that, you'll look like something out of an old National Geographic.
What y'all don't realize is that the...uhh...design of this dress is on purpose. Let's say you're going to the prom and you decide to stop off for a Big Mac on your way there. Big Macs are a bit on the messy side, so you may dribble some special sauce in your lap. With an ordinary prom dress, you have two choices: go home and waste the hundreds of dollars you spent on your gown, or clean off the sauce and spend the rest of the night walking around with this big-ass wet spot right where it looks like you peed yourself. But with this versatile gown, you just go to the ladies' room, turn the dress around and you're ready for a full night of youthful fun!

...and also shows how simply omitting that garment would turn a respectable dress into something more risque...say along the lines of what John Kerry's daughter wore to the Cannes film festival? http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/006161.html
