...that "lard hogs" is a misnomer, as today's hogs are bred to be leaner than any before them. The percentage of lard on a hog has declined precipitously in the past decade, thanks to breeding and better feed. Consumers are driving that by demanding leaner pork.
The young lady pictured had a great day, as state fair champion animals are auctioned and companies frequently step up to buy them for large sums, sometimes in the tens of thousands of dollars. Typically, the money is used by the exhibiting youngster to help fund a college education.
