Ok, I caved! Surfing with Mozilla Firefox right NOW...
I am not finding it any faster (but my system is old), and it isn't entirely cooperatring with the scrolling wheel on my mouse (I have to click outside the reply box to get it to work when I reply, but I guess I will adapt)... but I am happy to be using one less Microsquish product...

1. I tried it, much better than IE
But I find FastBrowser quicker and lighter than both and I like having tons of open windows. So I went back to FastBrowser.

2. I have never heard of that one
I am a Luddite though... this is a MAJOR leap forward. Of course, I am on dial-up, which is the real reason for slowness. I had DSL not too long ago, but moved to a place where the phone line isn't DSL-ready.

3. Keep tweaking, it's worth a little effort to fine tune it to Zomby needs,
and you will have to spend time cleaning a lot of IE crappola outta your system.

Patience, grasshopper.

Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 02:36 PM by havocmom
and there are some things you can do on preferences which help it along as you learn the system.

Wish there was an IE enema! What a great idea for a program! Too bad we are both Ludites!.

Yes, a bit better today. Got some sleep which is a big help. Thanks.

edited cuz a little sleep did NOT improve my typing

8. ZombyWoof---have you set up your own personalized toolbar?
You can put all your favorite bookmarked sites on a toolbar at the top so they are always just one click away.

You can open up several sites on one page by Right-Clicking & asking for them to "open in a new TAB" and not on a new page. Then you can click the tabs to check back and forth between different sites.

If you right click on on a tab you can choose to refresh all the tabs at once.

11. I'm surfing with Firefox 1.0 in my Firefox 1.0 Tee Shirt
It works much better if you have one of these!

Seriously, it is vastly superior to IE. Just give it a chance to kick in. You now have either no or very little spyware, great security, and a browser that is supported. MS is no longer seriously supporting IE because they have a 'borwserless solution' coming out in two years.

15. Oh lard, Thunderbird...from a past life.
You can really get your groove on with Thunderbird, especially if the bottle is in a brown paper bag...havn't used the email client. Uber haxor friends tell me it's great but I've been on AOL forever and I'm not looking for another layer.

There is a great article in the paper edition of Wired about Mozilla and how it was developed. I recommend it. Shows the American entrepreneurial spirit is still alive!

31. Can ya help maybe?
I've tried it and like it so far, but the only reason (though petty) I still use IE is because of the webbar auto complete. Ya know, just typin like the first two letters and the rest comes up automatically and you just hit enter? I don't see that option in firefox. It makes you have to click it from a drop down list. Does Firefox have an autocomplete setting I've overlooked?

Thanks

33. Welcome to DU!
That's a good question. I did find out that if I type the first few letters, the drop-down menu will appear, and then I hit down arrow to the right one and hit enter... I hope that made sense.

36. Here you go.
Go to "Tools" on the top menu. Then "Options" (at the bottom). Then click on "Privacy" (or it may come up automatically). Scroll down to "Saved Form Information" and check the box. That should do it. Good luck and enjoy. BTW, do get the tee shirt. It all works better with that.

46. Already Checked, Didn't Do It
I'm talking about the in-line auto complete that IE has. For Example, if I type www.de, into IE, it automatically populates democraticunderground.com and I just have to hit enter. It fills in the address bar automatically. I don't have to pick from the drop down list at all.

In Firefox, if I type www.De, It brings up the list of all the dem underground links, and I have to actually select one and click on it.

I'm looking to see if Firefox has the in-line auto complete feature like IE. Doesn't seem like it does but if anybody knows I'd love to know!

Thanks for the help

18. I actually used Netscape from nearly Day One
Back when I first got online in '96. But for some reason, when I bought this computer (originally with Win98, now with XP) 5 years ago, Netscape got buggy and crashed a lot on me, so I went with IE/Outlook and resigned myself to that fate.

Do you recommend Thunderbird? I would like to find a new email program today. Thanks!

everything I've heard about it is 100% positive. IMO Outlook is a hacker/spam/trojan magnet. Look thru the threads in the DU PC help group I mentioned. There's a number of references to it. Good luck.

23. I love that you can "train" Thunderbird to identify junk mail
and of course use their filter to filter out certain words you choose.

Thunderbird will retrieve mail from almost all email services through their "pop" mail feature, and notify you with a little flag that you have new mail.

It was a breeze configuring it.

:hi: Glad to see you are giving Firefox a try. Here is a site with tons of themes and extensions. http://www.extensionsmirror.nl. Click on "Forum Jump" at the bottom of the "Navigation" box on the left side of the page and customize away!

Some good extensions are Adblock, Tabbrowser Extensions, Mouse Gestures, Copy Plain Text, and Forecast Fox.

Just for fun, I have the Department of Homeland Insecurity Idiocy Level extension installed!
