4. An incident involving old butter, gingko nuts and/or
dirty gym gear that sat in a locker for a while. Or anything to do with butyric acid.

Why do you ask?

8. So was the affair truly smelly?

Butyric acid is the component that makes the things I mentioned stink-bad. Real bad. I always associate 'rancid' with butter. Just as a phrase, not an experience.

And his decomposing body was permeating everything in the hotel room, from the walls to the furniture to even the beer, turning a week of debauchery on Miami Beach into a rancid affair.

13. Sounds truly smelly
THAT smell permeates safe suits, so I'd say 'rancid' is good

OOhhh-wait! Was his decomposing body permeating everything in the hotel room? Or was the smell from his decomposing body permeating everything in the hotel room? I am assuming the AC was off for some reason...

6. The word "rancid"
always brings to mind butter.

However, if I read the phrase "rancid affair" I would assume it was some deal that had gone bad, gone sour.
