Should I stay at a Christian Hostel in Amsterdam????
It's called The Shelter--looks convenient AND cheap! They list it in my Lonely Planet book. Anyone ever stay there? Will they try to convert me? Thanks!

1. Noooooooooooooooooooo
I would pay a little extra and stay and one of the 'non-christian' hostels. I stayed at one of those the first night in Amsterdam, and it was creepy.

Just my two cents.

4. the other places I stayed at spoke english, too
most of the people I met there did.

The christian hostel was depressing, creepy and oppressive, but that's just my opinion.

6. Will they ask me where I'm heading when I go out late at night?
Basically, I'll be going out to "sin." Will they forwn about that? My basic concern is if they're busy-bodies!

12. they don't stop you, per se
but they do frown upon that. Really, if you want to have fun, stay at a privately run hostel.

Unless you like living in a guilt-heavy atmosphere, of course. ;-)

16. Went to Catholic schools as a kid, so I'm used to guilt-heavy atmospheres!
However, I wouldn't want to repeat that now!:)

14. If you're planning on partying, I'd stay elsewhere. They have a curfew.

That'll suck, as it's great going out until the wee hours of the morning.

Edit: At one of their hostels it's 1am (fuck that, seriously) and 2am (fuck at as well) at the other. They also have a no drug and alcohol policy. That's no way to visit amsterdam.

15. Yikes! That kills that idea!
I mean, I doubt I'll go out every night, but I want to be free to come and go if the urge strikes me!

7. Yuk, yuk! Actually, that is a concern...I want to experience ALL that
Amsterdam has to offer, and was worried they might be nosy and ask me all sorts of questions--like why I was out so late with the smell of sex and sour alcohol on me!

10. Two places I'd recommend.
Flying Pig Palace, on Vossiusstraat (beside the Vondelpark)
or the Arena Hotel out neer the Oosterpark.

By recommend, I mean, those are the two places I remember staying in that weren't crackhouses.

11. The Flying Pig looks good--very convenient, and they take reservations
online. The Shelter is a little cheaper, so I was wondering what that might be like. Can't recall where I stayed 20 years ago--was convenient and clean.

Thanks!
