They only had one kick on goal and made it. The USA had many and didn't make any. Come on women, get one in!

They knew they were done, so they gave up those last two. It's a shame, something I'd expect in highschool or even the WUSA, but not national play.
on edit: they didn't finish their shots well enough as I know they can, which makes it seem like they were giving up too much offensively. they played a tough game, there is no doubt- but I think they could have been more prepared for the Germans. They knew the Germans would be tough from the beginning. Watching the game, I don't think they were playing in their element, and the score isn't totally reflective of the actual level of play.

USA had pushed everybody up into the German half of the field trying to score - you do that - you leave yourself wide open for what happened both goals were the result of break aways - heck the same thing happens all the time even in the English Premier League.
Had they just "given up" they would have just gone into their shell and the end result would have been 1-0.

They did push up to try and score, yes- but I think they could have done a better job with finishing today, it just wasn't there. I know they could have played a better game, at points it seemed like it was just keep away.

I was at the game, and it was clear from the configuration of players in added time. Both of Germany's goals came on quick breaks back, with most of the U.S. team pushing toward Germany's goal. ESPN and local sports coverage also noted the pulled defender late last night.

Those were the four final teams.
Germany will go on to play either Canada or Sweden. The fact that I was hoping for a US vs. Canada final was just wishful thinking, I guess.

33. Actually, if you think globally, having the US NOT win is better... |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 09:13 PM by GOPisEvil
...for the game.
Just like the world has caught the USA in men's basketball, the world has caught us in women's soccer. While their loss is painful, if you think about the growth of women's soccer worldwide this is a good thing. Think about it: if companies realize that they can market to a worldwide audience, it is more likely that women's professional league will be well-funded. Just putting positive spin on a crappy night (except for the Germans - congratulations!).

35. I just hope it's a good, well-played game. |

The Swedes are playing really well right now. I only saw Canada play China, and they looked OK, too. I think these are two well-matched teams.
However, I think Germany will beat either of them.
By the way, that travel could not have done well for the US team - I think they were placed in the hardest group, and had to travel a lot because of the games being played here in the US again. That makes sense actually - I have no real problem with that - you have to overcome these things...

The U.S.-Germany match was incredible. The action constant, with amazing attacks and defense both beautiful and tough from both sides. U.S. coach Heinrichs said she thinks it may have been the best women's soccer match ever. I don't disagree!
Canada-Sweden was a blast to watch, too. Though it was like watching triple-A baseball vs. the major leagues in comparison to the first game. I don't intend to inflame anyone with that statement. It's just that the first semi was THAT good!

43. I'm just watching a re-run, |

as US-primetime is less than ideal for watchers in Europe. And I totally agree: awesome match so far. I hope this will help women's soccer (football) in Germany; it isn't a pro-sport here. With a few exceptions all those girls have normal daytime jobs.
So far a very fair game and the US girls have more of it - it might have gone the other way.
Btw: what were the two women protesting against? I wasn't able to read it.
