Poll question: What's your favorite Spike Lee movie? |
|
I'm a big Spike Lee fan and when I was home sick from work yesterday I got to see not one, not two, but THREE of my faves- Malcolm X, 4 Little Girls, and Crooklyn. What's your favorite Spike Lee movie, and why?

7. The first time I watched Bamboozled, I was very sick |
|
I was half asleep on the couch, and drifted off early on in the movie. I woke up during one of the minstrel show sequences and actually thought I was seeing a new Fox show. That was disorienting.

I saw it three times in a row. 'Course, I was on mushrooms and believed I was actually in the movie.

OK, now Do the Right Thing is his masterpiece so far and Macolm X may be his most important film.
And I think Bamboozled is one of the best over the top satires since The President's Anaylyst.
But I just love School Daze. A musical about campus life, the Greek system and the racism amongst different, pardon the term, shades of black folk.
With one of the most powerful and important final lines ever that could be a message for today.
Wake Up!

5. It's hard to choose just one |
|
Because I'm a big Spike fan, I find it hard to choose just one of his films. They're all great. Summer of Sam was intense and showed that Spike can portray a different community with great sensitivity. 25th Hour is just absolutely brillant, especially the Fuck You rant in the bathroom mirror, the first movie to really deal with the aftermath of 9/11. 4 Little Girls allows Spike to stretch his legs into documentary territory, covering the bombing of the 16th St. Baptist Church in Birmingham, a turning point in the Civil Rights movement. Do the Right Thing takes a long, hard stare at an uncomfortable topic. Bamboozled is absolutely seering. But my favorite has to be Crooklyn. It's evocative and warm, a true love letter to New York if ever there was one. I felt that we really got a chance to live with the family and characters in this movie, even more than in some of his other work.

11. That was the original Spike Lee Joint |
|
except for the documentary "We Cut Heads" about a barbershop in Bed Stuy, I think.
Clockers is another underrated Spike Lee joint. It was based on a novel by Richard Price and Harvey Keitel was in it.
I can't settle on a favorite. Either Do The Right Thing or Malcolm X.

9. I have to mention Get on the Bus |
|
I don't know whether or not it's my favorite Spike Lee film, but it's definitely up there and seems often overlooked. I liked the diversity of viewpoints assembled and explored.

10. I can't believe I left that off! |

But you only get so many choices. Get on the Bus is also really good.
