Best argument against Limbaugh....(The Sports Guy)
I still think Limbaugh should have resigned from the show, not because he's racist but because he made the dumbest argument in the history of pre-game football shows. How can you argue that McNabb was overrated because of his color, when Steve McNair -- a black QB, last time I checked -- has been the most unappreciated superstar in the league for two straight years? Seriously, who's better than McNair right now? If you had to win one game, is there anyone in football you would take over him?

So why doesn't anyone ever mention this? Who receives more attention these days: Plummer, Favre, Manning or McNair? Could the average sports fan even pick McNair out of a police lineup? More importantly, why hasn't anyone else noticed this but me? It's official -- he's replaced Favre as the "Guy You Never Wager Against Under Any Circumstances." The torch has been passed.

If you don't read Simmons, start now!!!

1. Well, that Limbaugh doesn't know what he's talking about
Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 09:12 AM by soupkitchen
is central to this entire controversy. As in, why was a race baiting blowhard who doesn't know what he is talking about (on any subject) hired to be a football commentator in the first place?
But your point about McNair is well taken. I really don't hear much about him in the New York area. Of course, because of Rush maybe journalists will be a little hesitant to praise a black quaterback now.
And here we have another reason why guys like Rush are so nefarious.
Or as James Brown said, "Why would anybody want to take us backwards?"

6. And ain't it great

that Rush is supposed to be so educated in sport? As I recall he did some minor league ball in his early years, is a huge fan (pun intended) of sports (right - his main interest is rump ranging, but it plays well to be macho sports guy in Freeville) and this wasa dream come true.

So, he knows nothing about his passion - football. Surprise. He also never voted before he became a political "expert". Think there is any chance he didn't know what the fuck he was talking about there, either? Perhaps he IS just that blowhard the Libs have always painted him to be... ya think?

edit to say general question, not directed at soupkitchen, meant to support SK's statement :hi:

2.  the ONE over looked fact that everybody missed

Sports media does not over hype "black" QB's. They only seem to because in reality they over hype "running" QB's.

3. Phil Mushnick in the NY ComPost makes the point
That all QB's are over-hyped when they win. That it's the nature of the beast that home town reporters sing paens to the QB's that lead them to victory. And the national medis buys into it as long as the team in winning.
I think your point is very valid too. I grew up watching Fran Tarkington, and there's always been something special to me about QB that can shred a defense with his legs. It just fun to watch, and therefore can easily be over valued by an audience.
Anyway, good point.

4. Coach Reid of the Eagles & the fans just want to win football games
Neither Reid nor any other coach is interested in making social commentary or promoting anyone that can't play football.

Limbaugh just doesn't understand competitive team sports, nor their fans nor the sportswriters.

That is a another good "sports argument" against Limbaugh.

5. Someone hired to talk about football
shouldn't be making social commentary.

And ESPN should have known that Limbaugh would cross the line.

7. This is central to the best argument against Limbaugh that I've read.
Robert A. George (of the New York ComPost) in Salon.com explains that Rush committed what George calls liberalism's worst sin: injecting race where it doesn't belong:

"Rush did what he hates in liberals. Instead of the typical liberal argument -- 'The man would get his real due if he were white' -- we got Rush's view, 'He's barely criticized because he's black.' And so, Limbaugh's analysis failed factually and ideologically. Unfortunately, in the one area where it succeeded -- injecting controversy on ESPN's pre-game set -- it introduced a particularly corrosive line of thought."

It's a thought-provoking trashing of Rush by a conservative:
