4. Also a beatles fan
I love it too. As a hobby I have been a student of rock and rock history and SPLHCB is just such a turning point.

To relate this to a candidate (sort of) the opening band for the Howard Dean rally here at the IMU in Iowa City on Sunday closed with "Tomorrow Never Knows" just before the speakers came up to introduce Howard to 930 fired up supporters. :) Another favorite song and album (Revolver) by the Beatles.

The Beatles are the greatest.

2. Actually, I'll take "Revolver," 1966.
In fact, if I had a time machine, I'd go back to 1966. Revolver, Blonde on Blonde, Pet Sounds, tons of great garage/psych bands, Star Trek, etc., etc... Plus, everyone still dressed waaay cool––the hippies hadn't f*cked everything up yet! ;-)

5. Donovan!
Donovan was, and STILL is the best that EVER was! IMHO, he surpasses both the Beatles and Dylan in every catagory - musicianship, vocals, songwriting skills... Any other Donofans out there???

8. Yep!
Definintely voice and guitar skills. Dylan has written a few great songs, but so has Don... Don't judge him on just what you remember (or don't!) from top 40 radio in the 60s. I am also a fan of the Beatles AND Dylan, but Don, IMHO, is the best of all.

10. Would you name what you think are the 5 greatest Donovan songs?
Not to argue with you. I'm not in to favorite music polls or contests, but I am curious about what other people prefer and since you are obviously a huge fan of his you will probably give an interesting list. If I don't know them I will search the net and then listen to them. Thanks

13. I'm with you.
SPLHCB may be the best known album cover from the 60s, but "Revolver" was by far their best album, followed by "Rubber Soul" and "With The Beatles". (All British Parlophone versions, of course.)

14. hippies
It wasn't the "hippies" who drafted me in 1966. I don't remember any "hippies" in the LBJ administration or for that matter in congress or on the Supreme Court. I must have been too stoned to see how hippies were the ones who f*cked everything up!!

15. Well... maybe you're right.
I guess I'm just nostalgic for the pre-Summer of Love era--as far as art and culture go, that is. I'll take my politics post-'67, thank you.

16. I bought my Sgt Peppers the first day I could get it
here. Back then it took around three weeks longer in small towns for LPs to arrive, so I must have had mine by the third week if June, 1967.

It has always been my favorite album, and it always will be. Period.

Hi karen,

I agree with you in every way about Donovan. Dylan has written many great albums, but year to year Donovan countered them with even stronger ones and really expanding his sound. Donovan debut Whats bin did and whats bin hid did is so much better than Dylans debut Dylan and offers so much more talent. Believe it or not Don's softmore effort Fairytale topped Dylans greatest folk album Freewheeling Bob Dylan and Catch the Wind surpassed DYlans the Times are a Changin on the charts. Dylan deep down was scared of Don and knew was for real. Don was the first to combine Jazz and folk with Sunny Goodge Street which happends to be one of McCartneys favorite songs of all time. If we get techical Donovan was really the first to plug in folk style at the NME 1965 Poll winners concert when he plugged in with a full band play your gonna need somebody on your bond. This was before the Folk Festival in 65, but everyone forgets these things. Sunshine Superman changed the face of Music and was written a full year before Revolver was even thought about. He was way ahead of his time. Only the big fans of Don know this along with the artists that lived it. I suggest to everyone to forget about Donovans greatest hits because his unknown rare works are truly his greatest hits. He has hundreds of brillant songs and many fabulous records, Only Donovan could pull off a record like HMS Donovan. McCartney or Dylan could never be that Tender and True. Just him with his acoustic writing the most beautiful songs ever penned.

Anyone have any questions on what albums they should pick up of Don's just ask, I could go on and on but its getting late.

17. I love Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
I remember when my parents brought it home and played it real loud.

In terms of popular music and also as a cultural landmark, its importance is enormous.

19. Good album, but overrated

Did it have a lasting effect on rock and roll? Yes, but not one that I particularly care for.

Thanks to "Sgt. Pepper," "Days of Future Passed," and other "concept" albums, no longer was it enough to simply state that a rock and roll song had a great beat and you could really dance to it. (Still the highest compliment you can pay a rock and roll song, IMHO.) Now, the tapes had to run backward, there had to be full symphonic and/or baroque accompaniment, every goddamned lyric had to have 26 layers of hidden meaning, and pretentious 14-year-olds (of all ages) could get together and intellectually circle jerk.

I'll stick to shaking my rump to the funk, thank you!

25. Nah... give a listen to "S.F. Sorrow" (The Pretty Things)
F*ckers at EMI/Abbey Road wouldn't release it until a year after "Sgt Pepper's" because they had already invested too much in hyping and marketing the Fab Four.

Better album, in my opinion.
