Poll question: Have you had a barium enema? |
|
And can you think of a worse medical test?

12. Ummmmm. And them's good eatin'! |
|
Honestly, I've had the upper G.I. series, and it didn't bother me that much. Not much taste to the barium, but it was better than a sharp stick poked in my eye.
But it was neat, later, to see my poo all varigated white and brown. I called all my local friends to come over and see this wondrous poo I created. If eBay had been around at the time, I think I could have sold it.

18. Actually, no. It was partially the result |
|
of realizing that any G.I maladies I had could be cured with copious amounts of beer, hot sauce, and triple-pepperoni pizza (God's Perfect Food). But as far as the hot sauce goes, I've always told my friends and relatives that, if it burns going in, it'll probably burn going out.
Anyway, that's today's drunken story and I'm sticking with it. :-)

2. I remember it as pure misery, |
|
the lower GI series being about as miserable as the upper GI series. Taught me never to complain to a doctor about GI symptoms again, as the symptoms could not possibly be as bad as those tests.

4. 12 needle stabs (biopsies) to the prostate... |
|
... without numbing and fully conscious, delivered via the rectum, is worse than the barium. But it was worth it to find out that I don't have cancer. Also drinking full gallon of laxative (not kidding) for a colonoscopy is worse than barium. I'm actually hoping for barium next time (next October).

7. if they do the barium enema correctly you should still take |
|
a lax before they do the test, or the reading isn't as good.
scopy is a better determinant anyway

10. NOOOOO So you want me to admit I sat on a cold table for an hour |
|
while they stuck a tube up my butt and pumped tons of nuclear waste into my arse and had to hold it for as long as possible before I exploded all because I had a tummy ache....NO WAY IN HELL! NEVER HAPPENED NOT TO ME...NEVER...EVER! Upper GI is worse, by the way, and vomiting is not an option!

11. Hey, I WORK in GI procedures right now! |
|
I deal with the people who've just drank that gallon of laxative...every day! Not a happy crowd I can tell you! But I can also tell you how worth it it all is...I see a lot of people who waited too late to get tested....sad, sad, sad..... You don't want colon cancer: now the number ONE cancer by the way. I've had the barium swallow and the upper endoscopy myself. Unpleasant, I'll admit, but after what I've seen I count my blessings EVERY day!

Yes, I'm one of those obnoxious nurses that calls people sweetie! I'm from the South, what can I say? I also call people sir and ma'am that are half my age! LOL! My Nana taught me well! Seriously, thank you. It means a lot to me that people appreciate the nursing profession. :hi:

16. NC_Nurse...when we are patients we ALL feel like children..we are |
|
after all at your mercy..and you DO GIVE MERCY...being called sweetie is a blessing when one is in pain and wanting to be home with one's family...THANK YOU FOR CALLING PEOPLE SWEETIE! YOU are the givers of care when we need it most and we need to be re-assured and being called 'sweetie' is a form of re-assurance. I could never be a nurse...pain and suffering just turns my stomach...thank God it does not turn yours and you watch and see and still you are kind and generous and patient. I am without words of appreciation for the nurses who cared for me when I was hospitalized.
