I just had a total melt down.
I was so pissed off about the beginning of the game, with all that military shit and bullshit patriotic stuff. I started ranting and raving at my mom.

Going off about how stupid the American people are for voting for Bush, the propaganda and lies that the administration spreads. About what selfish pigs Americans are. I was so livid, just about everything.

My mom said my face was all red. So I took some deep breathes and now I'm watching 'Two Weeks Notice', with Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant.

LOL I'm sure that really great for my blood pressure.

4. Not the game, the stuff before the game.
It not because of it, it just hit a nerve, or whatever. I was like AHHH! BUSH EVIL! MORONS VOTE FOR HIM! *tweak*

LOL I don't know... I think I needed to rant for a bit. It's nice to rant sometimes.

15. Umm, she wasn't talking about the game, specifically.
Though I'll be glad to rant about how football (the Superbowl in particular) can actually be seen as a metaphor for war, as numerous historians have already demonstrated, if you like.

It's a helluva lot more than just a game.

19. Hmm, don't think so
"American football, designed from the start to "simulate" war with offenses and defenses grappling for ground, is especially drenched in martial jargon: Coaches are field generals, if not commanders. Players are foot soldiers organized into platoons. Special teams are suicide squads. Long passes are bombs, often thrown from shotgun formations as part of an aerial attack mapped out in a war room."

http://www.tolerance.org/teach/current/event.jsp?cid=263

~snip~
And so we were right back to using metaphors about soldiers and heroes. Interestingly enough, "Let’s Roll!: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage," the book written by Lisa Beamer about her husband and Flight 93, emphasizes the athletic abilities of the passengers who fought the hijackers, even saying at one point: "And then there was Todd - strong, athletic, a gamer, the go-to guy." In this odd moment, the hero is valorized by a sports metaphor, rather than the athlete being valorized by a hero or military metaphor.

So what does this all mean? Kellen Winslow’s comments and Lisa Beamer’s comments about her husband Todd illustrate just how inseparable war and sport are in the American mind. That’s the reason we hear so many war metaphors in sports media and so many sports metaphors in war media. In our minds, football is a war, just on a smaller scale.

I say this perhaps because the number of people who watch football on television is likely comparable to, or even greater than, the number of people who watch media coverage of America’s various warlike endeavors around the globe. If sports and war are inseparable in our minds, then we should examine the consequences of such a yoking of ideas, and we must wonder if the connection of the two very different spheres of activity has a negative effect.

Of course, maybe we shouldn’t. War metaphors make for more colorful commentary by sportscasters, and sports metaphors make for more colorful commentary by Donald Rumsfeld and George W. Bush. By and large, people don’t like to think about what they’re consuming - they just like to be entertained.

There's a lot more I could quote, but I think you get the picture.

21. Yeah, I do

That some academic can spend an awful lot of time looking for metaphors to publish to justify their careers.

And that psychosocial and psychosexual innterpretations of culture can run rampant.

But, we're back full circle - it's a game and a diversion and I suspect most people realize it and act accordingly. It's only those at the ends of the curve that go crazy with analysis or involvement.

But I heartily suggest you research the origins of the game and then get back to me. Or perhaps that's too "academic" for your tastes. :eyes:

35. That's funny, 'cause Shakespeare once said:
"The lady protests too much, methinks."

I believe this to apply to football fans as well, both male and female.

war is competition. games are competition. it's all the same, whether it's chess, football, hockey, or ping pong.

It really is too bad they don't teach the history of certain sports in phys ed. You have to actually pay attention in Medievel European History to find this stuff out. ;-)

2. It's good for your blood pressure to let
off steam...not good for your body all around to keep it bottled up.

That's why I stay away from nationalistic sports such as the Superbowl (unless the local team is in it then I go to a friend's house and watch it) and the Olympics.

Mother f&*king Christ! Let's flush this stupid, mindless, jingoist phrase down the crapper, okay? Before someone gets hurt.

BTW, how many countries have you lived in? Are you really qualified to make the statement that America is the best place to live? No, I didn't think so. You've been raised from birth to repeat mindless, arrogant, nationalistic phrases that MEAN ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN THE CONTEXT OF REALITY. 'America is the greatest country in the world.' 'Land of the free'. 'Get over it.' AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHH! God, how I hate most Americans.

30. I had the same reaction earlier today
When I saw a piece on the Texas Cable News Network about Galveston's Mardi Gras celebration. Apparently the Texas National Guard were out in force. Instead of cops patrolling the streets, they had soldiers dressed in riot gear. I swear they looked like they weer in Baghdad or something. It was completely sinister. I swear we are in a fucking police state...
