McNabb Sick During Crucial Part Of Super Bowl
Receiver Allegedly Called Play

POSTED: 1:34 pm EST February 8, 2005
UPDATED: 4:51 pm EST February 8, 2005

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was so ill in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl that a teammate had to call a play in the huddle, three Eagles players have confirmed.

He fought to the end," center Hank Fraley told Comcast SportsNet on Monday. "He didn't get a playcall in one time. He mumbled and (wideout) Freddie Mitchell yelled out the play we were trying to bring in. He was puking at the same time trying to hold it in."

-snip-

"He was definitely having some kind of complications," Mitchell said. "It was hard. He kind of tried to give the hand signals to the team. I knew he was thinking and I finished the play up."

McNabb was visibly shaken just before halftime when the helmet of Patriots lineman Richard Seymour struck his jaw on a tackle. Videotape shows that McNabb seem dazed after the big hit, rubbed his jaw several times on the field and looked at his hand to see if anything was on it.

2. Oh yeah...
"It wasn't my fault. Honest! I ran out of gas. I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car! There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts! It wasn't my fault, I swear to God!"

3. Oh he was sick, but not so sick
that he couldn't throw that 30 yard touchdown pass with 2 minutes left that covered the spread and cost me $60!!!

5. No excuses. The game was lost in the first half.
The turnovers killed them, it should have been 21-0 on the way to a romp. Instead it was 7-7 at the half. Two deep turnovers kill you every time. The worst part is they were unforced errors. Even with that it was still only a three point game. McNabb is always sick during games, there is no excuse.

7. Wait, the score was tied going into the 3rd period
So how did they lose it in the first half?

8. By not jumping out to the 21 point lead.
By leaving those points on the field they let the Patriots hang around and establish their running game. If they are up by 21 the Pats have to throw on every down to catch up, which greatly changes the outcome. The two turnovers that did not become 14 points did them in.

6. Michael Wilbon says McNabb may have had a bloody mouth
Exerpt from yesterday's "Chat House" online chat with Mike:

Silver Spring, Md.: Re: McNabb
Thanks for taking my question. I think I heard you mention on Tony's show (plug alert!) that Donovan McNabb was hit in first half and this may have affected him later. Can you elaborate? I don't remember any particular 'hit' but he seemed eratic and the clock management was mysterious.

I remember thinking that Philly should have him do a couple planned runs just to get him loosened up. I know the Pat's defense was excellent but he seemed out of sorts. Was he hurt?

Michael Wilbon: He had a bloody mouth and kept rubbing his chin. I'm not saying for sure he has one...I'm wondering. He was so not alert with the game on the line. And after the game he was rubbing his chin, which is so uncharacteristic of Donovan. He played really poorly in what should have been a no-huddle situation. Donovan, despite his stats, had only a "C" game in my opinion, which is too bad because I love him and because he had a shot at leading his team past the Super Bowl...
