My link url just posted as F_CK YOU HOT LINKER!
I was trying to put a picture in a post, and when it posted it was a big yellow and black banner that said FUCK YOU HOT LINKER! I mean, how rude!!!! So I went "Ack!!" and deleted it.

What's the world coming to when you can't steal online content to support your attempts at humor. Geez.

Here I thought was just a mild-mannered DU poster, but this morning I learned that I am ... (cue dramatic music)A HOT LINKER!!! Outlaw of cyberspace!

To quote the Geto boys: "Damn it feels good to be a Gangsta!"

1. It is a rather not nice thing to do.
I copy the images I use to my photobucket account, because i'm nice like that. :D

2. Yeah, it's a problem of bandwidth
BW costs money. So when you hot link, you cost someone else money. Not a lot, mind you, but after a few thousand people are doing it to you...

4. Here's essentially how it works
For every byte of data you transfer from their servers to your computers, their Internet Service Provider charges them a fee. It's sort of like your electricity bill - for every watt, you're charged, say, 10 cents. Similarly, if you load a picture that is 10 MB from their server, they're charged a dollar (just an example figure). Now say there are hundreds of people accessing that picture. That's a hundred bucks, just from having one picture loaded. And then to add injury to insult, you're not even viewing the site - just that one picture. So they're paying for content you don't care about. That's why they get all hot and bothered.

7. Thanks for schooling me Vash!
I had no idea that was how the hot linking thing worked, I thought it was mostly only a copyright infringement issue. Now I know.

So, that means if I post this image from a GOP site, it costs them money? Cool!!

6. I'm a miscreant of cyberspace too
I also do it on occasion. F.U.H.L. is a tad rude in my opinion. It is just as easy to simply block the request.

But if you want to be a polite Fuego, open an account at photobucket.com. Then, when you see an image you want to use in a DU post, transfer it to your Photobucket photo-hosting space, and use the Photobucket URL instead of the original one. You can upload a photo from your computer, or copy the photo directory from the original host by supplying the URL.

Voila! Everyone happy.
