My Archie Bunker co-worker is getting a divorce- is it wrong to laugh?
I work with a guy who's like a 21st Century Archie Bunker, meaning he's less racist and more religious. When he first found out that my partner and I are not and have no intentions of ever getting married, he went off on a tear about how I don't love him, or he doesn't love me, and why buy the cow when you get the milk for free? Over the months and weeks we've worked together, it's come out that he has a miserable marriage- he considers it odd that my partner and I share a social life, doesn't even vacation with his wife and kids and talks about how disgusted he was with the way she looked in her wedding dress. Eeep.

Anyway, today he told me that he's getting a divorce because he just doesn't love his wife and never did. I said, "Gee, that's too bad," and he said, "Well, maybe next time I can get a deal like your boy got, where I don't have to get married at all," and I said, "Excuse me, but it takes a lot of work and commitment to keep a relationship going for ten years. You should consider yourself lucky if you're able to hang in there that long, with or without a wedding ring," He just laughed and said, "Well, I guess you got me there,"

The man has three young kids, and his marriage of six years has fallen apart. Am I wrong to feel some schadenfreude?

13. I don't think so
He's one of those people who considers his life an open book that everyone wants to read, if you know what I'm saying...

6. What a douchebag. So, he wants to abandon his three young kids?
Go for all the schadenfreude you want. He's an ass and deserves it. Save your sympathy for his wife and kids. (His wife may also be a jackass, but the kids are the ones who will suffer.) Has he considered how much of his paycheck is now going to be taken for child support? He may decide he loves his wife after all!

8. Yeah, no kidding he never loved his wife
I mean, did he not realize what the word "honor" meant in his wedding vows? Clue - not talking trash about your spouse falls under that category. Sheesh.

I would say yes, you should feel a little bad that you feel schadenfreude, but only a little.

10. Next time he slams you on some leftist point, ask him how
his kids feel about his lying to God in front of witnesses?

Did his vows include "'till death do us part" and all that stuff?

Did he have a church wedding? If so, he's likely to have proven to be a liar in front of dozens, if not hundreds of witnesses.

15. Well, he's pretty liberal
He's pretty liberal and open-minded on some stuff, and he voted for Kerry. But he has definite opinions that he doesn't keep to himself and if you go against them, he'll mock you pretty ruthlessly. We give each other shit all the time.

12. I did when a self-righteous Muslim colleague did the same
He was always quick to explain to us how he didn't want his young son growing up with our awful "American lack of values", what with all the premarital sex, homosexuality (the fault of allowing women so much power) and divorce, etc. Plus we let Jews run our country.

After I left the company, I found out his wife had gone back to Jordan with their son for a visit, and ran off with an old family "friend". So much for the superior values back in his home country, huh?

What gets me is he's still here, sucking up our American dollars and surrounded by all these immoral infidels. Just goes to show that religious arrogance comes in a wide array of flavors and colors....

18. They had three children during the first six years of marriage?
And he says he never loved his wife? What. A. Jerk.

People like him shouldn't be allowed to have children. He's in NO position to be telling anybody how to live their lives.

I can't imagine what it would have been like to not have my dad around when I was growing up.
