a (NON gannon related) question for GLBT DUers |
|
this is a totally stupid question, but i was just wondering how people felt. i am heterosexual, but dont like using that word all the time (not that i use it all that much, but i digress). i also hate the word "straight" because it has a connotation that GLBT people are skewed or twisted. how do you feel about the word, and are there any other words to denote heterosexuality?
like i said, stupid question, but i figured i'd see what people thought

1. Not a stupid question, but... |
|
Are you asking if we (LGBT people) have any other words we use for heterosexual people? If so, the answer is yes, but it's not very polite word. LOL
If not, then maybe it's time straight folks come up with their own word. We co-opted "gay" and "lesbian"... Neither word was assigned to us -- so I think it's up to you to decide what you'd like to be called.
I understand why you may dislike "heterosexual" -- it reduces you to the sum and total of your genital function. (That's the reason I dislike the word "homosexual," especially when used as a noun. "Homo-emotional" would be a lot more accurate.)
I agree with you about "straight" too -- but I have a feeling that will never fall into disuse, as long as so many hets do think it means "as opposed to 'skewed or twisted'."
The nice thing about "gay" and "lesbian" is that neither word needs an oppositional word (like "straight" as opposed to "bent"). Now, I think "transgendered" is the best word of all, because it puts me in awe of people who have literally transcended gender "norms". I'm kinda jealous of TGs for that. :)

i know that "straight" will never fall into disuse. but its one of those things where i hear people say "im straight, im not a fag," which is a word i hate even MORE. maybe its just where i live, lol.
i guess i just wanted a word that makes me stand apart from the homophobes who, if they dont openly hate, then "tolerate" just enough so that they can claim that they AREN'T homophobes.
and i've heard a couple of talks from transgenered people, and damn, i have a HELL of a lot of respect for them now, after what they went through

I am a gay DUer and 'straight' does not offend me at all.
I think that gay and lesbian people have more important things to worry about than simple semantics. Don't worry about saying 'straight'. Heterosexual sounds like somebody with a disease, as does Homosexual.
So I just say straight and gay.

3. How about verbs instead of nouns? |
|
Like "I like women. I fall in love with men. I like to look at women's legs. I feel satisified when I am in a relationship with a man." And so on and so forth. It's harder to make a movement or sell a brand of beer based on that, but it seems more descriptive of individual people, no?
