How nice are you when posting? Does it match your typical demeanor? |
|
I will admit that, on occasion, I am a little bit snarkier and more scathing when posting than I would be in a face-to-face situation.
But, then again, I can be a bit bitchy in person as well. Hmm... perhaps I'm just really not that nice. :-)
So, are you the same online as offline or is there a difference?

I think it is because I am "new" to this, and started a bit late in life...
or maybe I am not as nice as I believe....
or smart....
or very funny....cause' some of the posts here are hilarious.

51. I often stop some shit-ass thing I start |
|
generally when I think it'll destroy someone's enjoyment of something, and they've not done shit to me. Example: Someone posted how much they liked a certain place, how much they'd enjoyed it with their family, and I had a friend who'd worked there. i almost posted a nasty story about the place (based solely on opinion, not a fact-based post), and after typing a lot, I decided it was a shitty thing to post, and it was not my intent to post a shitty thing to that person. So I never hit 'Post Message.'
But sometimes, I do like bitchslappin' some folks around. In person or online. And I'm good at it too.

I have seen so many people in the same boat jumped on under suspicion that they are Freepers that I'm pretty careful with tone, and If saying something remotely controversial I try to head off charges of disloyalty to the party by throwing in some true but otherwise unecessary reassurances of my fidelity.
I don't do that elsewhere as my liberal bona fides are very well established and not doubted.
Honest.

77. I find intonation and intent cannot come through online. |

I'm rather a person who pretty much never tries to be intentionally hurtful, but we are all products of our experiences which may vary making each and every one of us much more complex than this often one-dimensional framework can show us to be. I have no problem expressing my opinions or viewpoints, but I tend to be a somewhat more soft spoken person in reality (with the occasional dark and sarcastic sense of humor). I've often been told I'm aloof. It's more like I just don't open up easily.

78. I'm a smartass on and off line |

I'm a nice person...until I'm not (then I can be really really shitty)...but that's true on and off line.
My husband claims I'm nicer to on line personalities.
I have to go "debate" this point with him now.

I think I am about the same, except a little more silly here than I am in real life.

82. My internet personality is carefully crafted... |
|
My earliest posts on the internet scare me -- I am actually afraid of early usenet and mail archives. In closets and warehouses across the nation there are old nine track tapes disintegrating, and I'm sort of glad about that.
I can type as fast as I think, but in person I can't keep up with anything more than one-to-one conversation. Situations where many people are talking are just a blur to me, and I can't ever "get a word in edgewise."
My typical demeanor is quiet and affable. I also have a "Mr. Hyde" mode which got me into a lot of trouble in high school and college. I could add gasoline to any fiery argument. I would quickly escalate political and religious arguments to a very personal level.
I also have an artificial quiet "authoritarian" demeanor that I was forced to develop for teaching and dealing with my own kids. A lot of kids see right through it, but mostly they'll play by my rules whenever I'm wearing my teacher mask.

Honestly, I hate it when people do things with the sole intent of making someone else miserable.
So I try to be nice--here and in 3-D
