Has anyone else seen "Donnie Darko"? |
|
The Director's Cut came out on DVD today, and I just watched it. WOW. What a brilliant movie. Absolutely mind blowing. Jake Gyllenhaal is incredible.
I don't want to spoil too much, but this is a film for people who like to be continually surprised, who don't mind a tone that switches from comedy to tragedy, realism to farce, and back again, over and over.
Who else has seen it?

7. Wasn't that Depp in "Donnie Darko"? I still like the movie, regardless. |

4. I think you're thinking of "Donnie Brasco" |
|
"Donnie Darko" is a completely different kind of movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246578/combined

10. I stand corrected, sort of-I actually thought Depp was in this one |

I've seen both flicks, I'm also stoned.

2. I actually found this one a little fragmented . . . |
|
Too broken-backed to engage me emotionally.
But then I'm something of a square when it comes to movies.

8. Did you see the original version or the Director's Cut? |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 12:07 AM by Finnfan
I've only seen the latter, but I've heard that it fleshes the story out a little.

Loved the soundtrack. Jake and Maggie? Gyllenhall and the entire cast were terrific.

I think the director's cut would be very interesting, I'll have to check it out.

12. Amazing film. It is highly instructive. A metaphor for our times. |
|
Conflict between creativity and structured education: Donnie v the high school environment.
Conflict between commitment and bureaucracy: teacher v the high school administration.
Faux morality suckering the crowd: Jim Cunningham, the positive thinking huckster "Gannon" sympathizer.
Quantum physics, etc. etc.
Oh yeah, alienation and psychosis as a reflection of our reality.

On edit: Yikes, you've got it. This film anticipates the horros of the * era, HW & W. It all started here. Great point.
