I want to thank my dearly departed grandmother for something she taught me |
|
When I was about five years old, my grandmother offered me a butterscotch. I never much cared for butterscotch, so I said something along the lines of "ewwwww, what else do you have?"
She smacked me. Yeah, my GRANDMOTHER. Only time in my life she ever did that. It wasn't hard and I'm not condoning smacking kids (she grew up in a different time, obviously), but it was more the SHOCK of my sweet grandmother smacking me than anything else. I still remember tears springing to my eyes.
She said "Now c'mere. When someone offers you something, you say 'thank you' or 'no thank you,' you NEVER gripe about FREE. Now what do you say?"
I snuffled and said "No thank you" and she hugged me.
I kept my distance from her when she would extend her hand with candies from then on, but it's little lessons like that that I'm thankful for now.

LOL.
That was SO uncharacteristic of my grandmother. I mean, this is the woman who, when I was 12 and took my grandfather's Cadillac out for a spin to prove I could drive to my country cousin (who was also 12), she hugged us like we were on the verge of death when we got back (we were busted), made us hot fudge sundaes and NEVER told our parents.

My snotty country cousin Lisa didn't believe that I could drive. Thinking anyone over 50 is deaf and blind, we climbed into Papaw's Caddy and backed that sucker out of the garage and took it around the block.
Unfortunately my grandfather was out front mowing, was NOT blind, and looked up in time to see his two 12 year old granddaughters cruising on by in his brand new Cadillac. He probably nearly had a heart attack.
We saw him look at us (we were going by on a side street) and KNEW we were busted. Lisa nearly wet her bathing suit.
HE wanted to tell our parents, our grandmother begged him not to. She looked at us and said "They'll NEVER do anything like that AGAIN, will you girls?" And of course we said no and never did.
I musta been crazy that day.
