Question about old/new DU

I joined DU in August 2003. Why is there an "old" and a "new" DU?

(By the way - completely unrelated to my question, of course - my parents have always been Republicans. My dad passed away a few years ago, but my mom, though still a conservative Republican, is just as puzzled as we here at DU are as to why anyone would vote for Arnold. And it's not even about the groping - when he speaks, she says, "He's not even saying anything!")

1. They upgraded the software this summer

all the "old" DU went into the archives and brought on the "new" DU

...why I couldn't do a search going back to 9/11. (I was trying to read the DU reactions from that week.) I'll try a search at the old site. Thanks.

2. they upgraded the servers

I joined in februari i think and soon after they upgraded the servers.. nothing really changed though imo
