The local proponent of this is the owner of the land (naturally). This is the same goober who put this sign up a few years ago:

BTW - I didn't vandalize the sign...

3. About a year ago?
I think. When I first got out of the Army ('93) I used to go all the time I was not aware of WALMART as I am today.

To this date I have NEVER been greeted. Never not once and that includes walking in with my mother and my wife...NEVER been greeted-I have directly made eye contact with more than one greeter and still nothing nada nerts.

...but I think it was a Wally's. In San Diego, just north of the border. Stopped on the way south to buy something that seemed essential at the time, and Wally's was near the off-ramp.

19. Me, too, I've only been in a Wal-Mart a few times and they were FILTHY
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 12:02 PM by Zenlitened

I mean, it was the first thing I noticed. Not just shabby and worn, but GRIMY. Ick.

Fortunately, I live in an area where we have tons of shopping options.

Plus, I've been on kind of a "No More Stuff" kick for a few years. I try very hard to make a distinction between what I need and what I want.

Most times, the feeling that I want a particular thing turns out to be pretty fleeting. If I ignore the impulse to buy buy buy, it usually goes away and I'm no worse off for not having another "something" cluttering up my life. :)

41. Yeah, the whole POINT of most TV is to urge us to buy buy buy
Not just the commercials anymore, but the shows themselves. Think of the dozens of "home improvement" shows that air every day -- I'm convinced they're deliberately designed to make us unhappy with what we've got.

They don't even fix up "dumps" on these shows. Instead, they tear down, rip out and throw away perfectly decent rooms, furniture, appliances and even entire sections of a house.

So you can sit down to watch TV in your perfectly comfortable home, and half an hour later you're hating everything around you, and making plans in your head to throw it all away to get something new new new bigger better more more more!

Ugh.

13. About 18 months. I go out of my way just to shop at Target
Target ranks at or near the top of the list of most philanthropic companies in America. Since WALMART can't see fit to give ANYTHING back to the communities they wreck, I'll spend my money at Target (and get MUCH better stuff while I'm at it.)

14. 'Have not stepped in one in more than 8 years....
Early on, I was just annoyed at how crowded with junk they were and you couldn't maneuver in their dark jumbled aisles. But, it didn't take long to see what they were doing to small town downtown and independent stores and devastated hospitals trying to deal with Walmart's uninsured employees in their already crowded ERs.

Sam Walton should be feeling plenty of heat wherever he is now, if you ask me.

Looking for cheap curtains and wanted to compare prices/quality. As I expected, everything was sucky, and since I had no intention of getting anything from WM unless they managed to impress me (HA!), I ended up buying from a small family-owned specialty shop in our neighborhood.

16. Haven't been in one in four years, EXCEPT ONE TIME
When Michael Moore's F-911 came out on DVD, I walked in, bought one, and left. I went there specifically to buy it, first, to make a perverse point, and second, because I knew they had it in stock, having called ahead. It was sale priced, too--I think I paid $14 bucks for it.

They had to unlock a display case to get at it, and while I was waiting, I started talking to two or three other people about the film. By the time the clerk got back with the key, there were four people, besides myself, who wanted copies. Heh, heh!

They put one up in a beautiful open field where I used to bring my dogs for a run - now it's all parking lot and ugly building at the base of a pretty mountain. Sad.

I went there a few times when they first opened but was not impressed and preferred to patronize the family owned downtown businesses I'd been going to for years - prices were a bit higher but quality and service were so much better.

I want to do some comparison shopping so I bought my groceries from Wal-Mart. I found out that Wal-Mart does NOT have the lowest prices. Wal-Mart's prices are the same as any other retail outlet. Plus the selection sucks. Just one more reason to boycott the Bentonville Bully. And I do.

42. Probably three or four months ago
I stopped shopping there three years ago (with only one transgression, when I was given a gift card to spend there), but have been there a dozen times or so because I have friends who still go there so I have been there and looked around. Also, my former place of employment used to do their banking through Wal-Mart, and I was told to pick up supplies from there from time to time, for my job.

In small towns, it sucks how sometimes Wal-Mart is the only option for many. There are plenty of items that are only available at Wal-Mart in my town of 19,000- which is a pretty sad scenario. I am able to avoid it myself because I make a conscious effort, but there are some who are too lazy to do that, or think Wal-Mart's success is too inevitable to worry about fighting it. (My parents are about as liberal as I am, but I can't convince them to stop going to that stupid place.) There are also those who are poor enough that Wal-Mart's generally lower prices really do help; also, the cost would start to add up if they tried to drive out of their way (in my town's situation, twenty-five miles or so) to get what they needed at the next-most-convenient location. This is how Wal-Mart thrives.

50. Amusing, then disturbing....about 2 years ago
I went to Barnes & Noble with my best friend. She needed to use an ATM, which was in the Walmart across the parking lot. So she uses the ATM and we're on our way back out when we pass a large, freeper-looking family.

A little boy, about 6 years old, suddenly says, "Mommy, are you drunk again?" Now I'm managing to hold it together, but my friend cracks up hysterically, and the second I looked at her, so did I. We bolted out of there.

Once we got outside, we realized it was actually sad because a kid that young has to be basing that question on reality.

Walmart is still scary. The only thing I've ever purchased there was about 8 betta fish. They had them in tiny tupperware containers only about as wide as the fish was long and filled only enough to cover the fish. I felt terrible and bought all of the ones they had. I put them in more suitable containers and some of them lasted for 2 years.
