HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SMOKEY ROBINSON!
William "Smokey" Robinson was born in Detroit on February 19, 1940. With his group, the Miracles, Smokey cut the first single ever released by Berry Gordy's new Motown record company--1958's "Got A Job."

Throughout the '60s, Smokey Robinson was a constant presence in the top ten, not only with the Miracles but also a songwriter and producer. He went solo in 1972 and enjoyed a string of hits (mostly on the R&B charts) the lasted well into the '80s.
