2. at the same time, the simpsons are known for pulling stuff like this.

they love to show society's foibles by displaying a "flameworthy" part of society. thus, gay marriage.

what would be AWESOME is if they didn't talk about gay marriage at all. just threw that in front, to show how ridiculous it is that it is a factor.
