Ebay "spoof email" alert.. |
|
I received the following email this morning. I alerted ebay and received the also following email that this was indeed a spoof email.
Phoney email: Dear eBay user,
We regret to inform you that your eBay account has been suspended due to the violation of our site policy below:
* Misrepresentation of Identity (User) - Representing yourself as another eBay user or registering using the identity of another.
Due to the suspension of this account, please be advised you are prohibited from using eBay in any way. This includes the registering of a new account.
According to our site policy you will have to confirm that you are the real owner of the eBay account by sign in and complete the form that will pop up or you won't be able to bid or sell.
Thank you
eBay Customer Support _____________________________________________________________________ Ebay's response:
Thank you for contacting eBay's Trust and Safety Department about email solicitations that are falsely made to appear to have come from eBay. These emails, commonly referred to as "spoof" messages, are sent in an attempt to collect sensitive personal information from recipients who reply to the message or click on a link to a Web page requesting this information.
The email you reported did not originate from, nor is it endorsed by, eBay. We are very concerned about this problem and are working diligently to address the situation. We have investigated the source of this email and have taken appropriate action. You may rest assured that your account standing has not changed and that your listings have not been affected.

2. I assume this means that... |
|
eBay has contacted the originating ISP about someone using it for criminal purposes.
I've been digging through the email headers on these and directly contacting the abuse people at the ISPs about this, and have had encouraging responses. They don't like this either.
I get two or three a week now, and it seems to be really ramping up. Who knows how much money these crooks have been making off of this so far.
