NEW YORK (AFP) - The flashing dance floor on which John Travolta strutted his way to stardom in "Saturday Night Fever" is being put up for auction.

The multicolored floor had remained a fixture at the 2001 Odyssey nightclub in Brooklyn -- later renamed Spectrum -- ever since bearing the weight of Travolta and his tight, white suit in the 1977 movie that turned the disco trend into a global phenomenon.

"I had to," Rizzo said. "Over the years, we've had thousands of people who come here just to see it.


"It is incredibly popular with tourists, particularly from Europe. It has literally been the heartbeat of this club," he said.


The dance floor, which measures 384 square feet (36 square meters) and uses more than 300 coloured, flashing bulbs, will be put on the auction block on April 1.
