5. Adams wrote the screenplay before he died. so hopefully it will be OK. |
|
Jim Carey was scheduled to play Zaphod when Adams died and then that deal fell apart and they went with a different group. Alan Rickman is playing the voice of Marvin. It can't be as bad as the BBC production.

Hithikers book (paperback) by Doug Adams. Also - anyone in Milwaukee should check out the glacier in the Third Planet gallery - notice the glacier is signed by the artist - just like in the book. An inside secret - you have to really look to find it. Just one more really cool thing about that museum.

I grew up on those books, and I'd be really curious to see the movie, at least to see how accurately it manages to capture the spirit of Adam's books. Even if the movie isn't good, at least I'll have seen for myself whether or not it did the books justice.
And if its release date is in early May, that means it will be still be in the theaters when I finish my final exams for this semester. Woo-hoo!
I must admit, I'm a bit bemused and intrigued at the fact that Mos Def will be playing Ford Prefect. I'd be very curious to see whether he can pull it off.

I was going to, but then I saw the trailer. It looks like one of those bad film adaptations where the screenwriter flipped through the Cliffs notes, made up his own story, and grafted on as little of the book as he thought he could get away with.
I like the idea of Alan Rickman playing the voice of Marvin. He's perfect for the part, even if the onscreen character looks like a refugee from the set of Power Rangers. It's a shame he'll be the only British actor in the movie (I don't know who the guy playing Arthur is, but his accent slips so often in the trailer alone, it can't be real). That's what happens when you listen to Hollywood over the BBC.
This movie actually doesn't look half bad, so it might succeed on its own merits. But I expect that anybody who hopes it will be true to the book is in for some serious disappointment.

Also according to IMDB, Stephen Fry will be the voice of the Book. That's actually great news: not only that they picked an actor who'd be a great fit for the part, but that the part exists at all.
Okay, so the cast isn't as Yank-heavy as I expected. I still think the movie is going to disappoint die-hard fans of the book/radio series.

<checks imdb>
Well, I'll be damned.
I'm sorry if this sounds belligerent, but I'll believe that when I see it officially, and probably not even then. While I normally trust imdb explicitly, I have a really hard time believing that Douglas Adams was the principle architect behind this movie. Besides, even if he had a hand in the original screenplay, who's to say someone else (for instance, co-writer Stanley Kirkpatrick, and/or director Garth Jennings) didn't change everything between Adams' death and the start of filming?
And please note that I'm not saying the author of the final version of the screenplay wasn't familiar with the book/radio series. I imagine he actually knew the story reasonably well, but decided to take the movie in a completely different direction, keeping just a few memorable bits here and there to make it look faithful. The end result gives the impression that he didn't understand the source material, when in fact he simply disregarded it.
I hope I'm making sense. No, really, I do hope that. It's 2am here and I'm barely awake...
